I was planning on changing my transmission and motor oil tomorrow but after reading several posts, the transmission oil change looks a bit different than others. I had a '90 300zx earlier and when I changed my transmission oil, I unplugged the bottom drainer and refilled it through the side opening of the transmission with SAE 80W90 Gear Oil. I saw an earlier post of how this guy took off the shifter opening and unplugged the bottom drainer. He also used regular Motor Oil? I'm new to 240s so help me out guys. Should I still use the SAE 80W90 Gear Oil since I still have some leftover?

2.4L for 240sx transmission of gearoil. you can use the 80-90, I'm just using straight 90 from redline. make sure it's gl4 though.

do it the same way you used to. through the shifter is the ghetto-easy-guess-at-the-level-and-hope-my-transmission-doesnt-die method.

do it through the shifter if you don't havea pump to do it on the side. You will still know how high to fill when you unplug the fill plug on the side. You jsut won't be filling from there.

Most of the automotive stores in my area have only GL-5. I can't seem to find GL-4 anywhere. I live in San Francisco so I mostly go to Kragen. But do you guys think Napa or Autozone has it?

Right on 180fan. I'm gonna check that place out tomorrow. Exactly how much should I get? Do they sell them in gallons also or in quarts?

I had a DIY with pics and everything in the articles section once, but the photos have since been deleted and I've been too lazy/busy to fix it-- so here:

It really is easiest to fill from the shifter hole and drain from the plug on the bottom. There is a filler plug on the side of the transmission though, in case you want to do it that way (with a pump). What you do is drain the oil first from the bottom, seal it back up, open the side ("fill") plug, remove the shifter assembly, and pour the oil in from that hole. You are NOT guessing on how much oil you need-- you can either have a friend watch the "fill" plug for when oil starts to come out, or simply pour in the transmission oil capacity. (I'm not sure exactly what the capacity is off hand, but it's definetly listed in the FSM...)

As for oil, I think I used 80-90 wt gear oil. It was a little bit heavy for the winter (hard to shift cold), but it's perfect for the summer: smoothed out my chirping 3rd gear to completely silent + smooth.

Good luck!

jaylivesinsf: They sell bottles by quarts. You'll need 3. I'm using the redline stuff in my own car. Tested it in my other buddy's s13 and works very well.
