Hey guys,

My dealer recommends changing out my Mobil 1 every 6000km. I called a dealer in NJ, and they are telling me 5000 MILES. I think the Canadians are getting royally ripped off when it comes to oil change intervals.

What do you think?...

Depends on the engine.... 3.3L has a very small oil pan and 3000 mile oil interval is very important to engine life. Especially since the Vg33 normally runs very hot and needs to be driven hard just to make the R50 Pathfinder go anywhere. The oil goes through some major breakdown in a Vg33. 3.5L has slightly larger oil pan and runs cooler so 3000 miles is not so important, you can probably drag it out to 5000 miles. Also, if you use synthetic oil, they claim you can go further but I don't use it myself, I prefer dino oil but thats personal preference

Thanks Fueler!

The dealers in Canada just claim that the oil filter won't last past 6000km to be safe...but the Americans don't seem to think so...the Canadians do admit the oils last longer....

GRR. What are your thoughts?

Fram does offer a filter designed for long-life synthetic oil (offered only in Canada). Simply called "FRAM Synthetic Oil Filter", it's supposed to last 11,000km. If you can't find that, their "Extended Guard" filter is also supposed to last 7000mi/11000km.

http://www.fram.com/products/oilFilters.php

Descriptions for both filters are identical, so I have no idea what the difference is.

I popped on the synthetic filter last oil change, but I'm approaching the 5000km mark and starting to get a bit nervous. I'll probably check the oil around that point just to make sure that there's no excessive dirt/debris in it.

Worst case, just replace the filter around the 5000km mark. Good idea to top off the oil at that point too... my 3.5L burns off 1-1.5L every 5000km, plus if you change the filter you'll lose whatever oil was in the filter too.

I have been less than religious about my changes at times; always run synthetic though. Not that this is a recommendation, but I usually fall between 6-8K miles between changes with mostly city driving. Anything beyond that makes me nervous. If I'm getting close and expect a trip through the desert in the summer, I'm more cautious about everything.

If you guys are changing mobil 1 out well before 5000 Miles, you are pouring a lot of good oil away. I would go 6 k with new oil filter at 3000 and top off.

Use Pure 1 oil filters by purolator. Best filter.they make 2 sizes for 3.5 and get the larger, it does work great.

It is a few minutes to change oil filter. The Mobil extended life I think it is called has better additive.

Check out Bob is the oil guy.

Fram probably the worst filter to buy...

Don't know about the "Synthetic" one...but....

My choice is the NAPA Gold 1356...which is a little bigger than the 1365...

The napa is Wix and is good. They make a real real long one, which has a wider base gasket by just a little, and is the same threads. It is not something I would recommend to anyone, but I did it. holds a ton, and same PSI bypass. The gasket seals because filter platform is large and flat. But this is dangerous ground. I had a perfect seal, and it held like 3x as much as that little wimpy guy.But Pure 1 is my choice in longer. some say the thin gasket of 56 is not enough, but it is in my experience just fine and proven over and over. I would not put a fram in any of mine. Funny cause they have the name.Cardboard and glue-man!
