before i change the oil in my 04 M, just wanted to see if there was a specific type brand that is prefered by anyone who has had their car for an extended amount of time. I use royal purple in all my other cars, and plan to on this one unless someone has a good reason not to. I read somewhere synthetic is not reccomended, so ideas. Oh, the car just turned 65K, consumes about 1ot every 1k and I've decided to live with it. no sense in doing an oc test because i know what they will say and the dealer is a 70 mile round trip. thanks

I use synthetic in my 2003 without problems ... Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W-40 since 7.5k miles and I am now just over 60k miles. Since you are in Temecula, in very mild to hot climates, either the 10W-30 or 0W-40 would be fine, although I might prefer a bit thicker oil. If you like RP, and RP has a 5W-40 or 10W-40, try that instead of a 10W-30 perhaps.

A regular change of oil and filter every 3750 miles.

I might try Synthetic once. But if it doesn't resolve in 3000 miles don't waste your money, just keep it topped out with DINO and enjoy

Hmmm ... I think that is too thin an oil for your M engine and will not have the right characteristics and additives either! Please consider getting a 5W-30 at least.

Yup!

Like I always say, if you do a frequent enough oil change (like every 3750 miles or less, with regularity), then any good dino oil will do just fine too! In fact, my advice for folks trying to stretch OCI way too far with a synthetic (generally, for cost reasons), don't do the synthetic - do dino instead with a reasonable interval.

Based on other experts recommendations, Castrol GTX 5W-30 and Chevron Supreme 5W-30 are good dino oils and available just about anywhere. But, if you want to use some other oil, then that is fine too ... just do oil and filter the change regularly and without fail.

According to experts, Pennzoil Platinum is almost the best synthetic to use. Check out Bob Is The Oil Guy. UOA's prove it. As far as dino, Valvoline Maxline is an great oil to use even though it's a sny blend. I myself use Mobil Clean 5000 but I will probably change over to Valvoline Maxlife my next oil change.

PS: If you are going to use Castrol, please make sure it's German Castrol...

i used 5-30 RP, I'll keep an eye on the consumption. The car does not smoke ever like some of the complaints I read. I'm always careful to let the engine run for a couple of min before I put it in to gear for the first time, then I usually wait about 30 sec after starting for every other start of the day. Funny thing about people trying to strech their oil changes, the giy I bought the car from told me he had a "special" oil put in it that was good for 25K, I did not want to laugh in his face, but common 25K miles??? the oil change cost him around 100 bills.... are there really shops out there taking people for these "special" oil changes?

True for Castrol Syntec 5W-30! It is an excellent oil, but tough to find the German version ...

Regardless, the non-synthetic Castrol GTX 5W-30, as a dino oil, is excellent ... regardless of where it is made.

Again, sorry to beat this drum so hard ... but ... "use any oil you all want" - just change the oil and filter often enough!

Thats the million dollar answer!! Basically, any dino oil is quite good, just make sure you do proper oci's.

That's why I've been using MC 5000. For $8.97 5qt. jug, you can't beat it.

I have been stocking up on MC5000 5W30 for a while. You cannot beat this deal.

One of the newer scams is the return of the 1 qallon container. Many auto supply houses got rid of all the 5 qt containers and only sell the 4qt. They charge the same price as before. Pity the fool who does not catch it.

How about using the Mobil 1 extended performance oil and filter??? Why doesnt infiniti use synthetic oils like m-benz and bmw....M-Benz and BMW oil change is every 7-10,000 miles....i think changing the oil every 3-4,000 miles is too frequent....synthetics are much better and provide better protection to engine parts...and allow you to change the oil less frequently

I run Mobil 1 synthetic in mine and change the oil every 5K with no problems.

Well ... I have seen what color and physical condition the oil is in when it comes out of my engines at 3750 miles, compared to what went in! Yes, an oil analysis showed that it could go farther ... the problem is that I cannot tell whether the analysis was a sharp measure (no tails or gentle degradation, or there was a steep cliff at some higher mileage). Meaning that it might have changed differently for a different time of year, different gas used, etc., etc., etc.

Without spending too much more time and money doing more oil analysis, etc., and repeating every so often in case the formulation has changed, etc., it is far simpler to be conservative about the OCI and not worry about the oil condition at all. All I have to do is check the level periodically ... I don't worry about whether the oil has reached its operating limits or not!

So ... I'd rather play it safe. I'd much rather use dino oil (if cost was an issue for some reason) and keep switching at 3750, than extend a synthetic for more miles than 3750. Inspite of the recent hikes in prices, it is still cheap enough insurance anyway.

yeah, I was confused, lol. Anyway, I have noticed some oil usage so I'll probably switch to a different brand. The Ford oil is a synthetic blend. I figured if it was good enough for my 498 rwhp cobra it would be good enough for my M45. But I'm nnot really sure. I do change my oil every 3500 miles though, usually sooner if I'm bored.

I don't know the Ford oil ... in terms of synthetic blends, the typical recommended one around here is the Valvoline.

. In that case, use any 5W-30 you find at a good price!

Are there any special measures that need to be taken when switching from Dino to Synthetic?

I really didn't lilke how my VH45DE ran on 5W-30 M1 in Seattle.

In my case, I mechanically flushed each crankcase when I switched to remove the conventional goo from the sump.
