Hey guys

Im planning to switch my 3.5 A/c over to synthetic right now (7000km). Im currently deciding weather or not i want the dealership to do it or to do it myself.

Before the flaming begins, this is my thought process..1) Dealership synthetic oil change = 80$ (I know thats a f***ing ripoff)2) Synthetic oil filter 10$ + oil= 30-40$ = 50$

Im saving 30$ and if anything goes wrong in the future ( Some random thing happens to the engine) i dont have a record with Nissan. I was thinking of getting my oil done 4 times for the first year with Nissan for the bookkeeping records, and then most likely after a year ill know my car so i can go ahead and do it myself. A 30$ difference 4 times = 120$ , but again, i think if i spent this much on a car, i dont want anything to go wrong with it.

Anyones thoughts? Should i just do it myself?

Bring your own, only costs 20 dollars plus how ever much the oils costs. I bring royal purple to my Nissan dealer and they have no problem with it.

Yeah, sometimes I wonder that too but I usually hang around and watch so I wouldn't mind if someone tried that. I am sure it would be worth a lifetime of free oil changes or sometime!

Just change it yourself. You'll save a little money maybe and you'll have the peace of mind that you know you did it yourself.

^ After a few self-done oil changes, you'll save enough money to buy a new toy for your car.

I'd do mine myself but I also get mine for free (3 years) and can upgrade to synthetic for $20

Like longbeach said I don't trust people enough. Just do it yourself and save some money. Just my 2cents.

BTW - There's always the small oil units out there, cheaper than dealers, and you can request/insist on bottles in most cases, will save you the $20-30, give you peice of mind, and keep you clean ....

And then there are the contributions to the toy fund ....

Royal purple is almost transparent on the dipstick after the oil has been freshly changed. If it aint transparent, they either ran your car for 50 miles before giving it back to you, or they ripped you off.

change it yourself. nissan factory filters are only 6 bucks at the nissan parts shop and you know it was done with precision and care when you do it yourself.

nobody cares about YOUR car more than YOU do!

for those of you using synthetic, what is the interval you're doing oil change at? I'm tempted to go synthetic but it is quite pricey at 5 bucks a quart

In my BMW i used to change is once every 12,000 miles. I will change mine 1,000 miles greater each time till i get to 7,000 with this car. 3k, 4k, 5k, 6k, and finally 7k. When i get to that point i will change it every 7k miles as the engine has been broken in as good as its going to get.

My most recent change interval was 6000 miles using Mobil 1 5W30 and NAPA Gold filter. I sent a sample of the oil in for analysis and it showed the oil was still in very good shape and still had useful life. Very little fuel dilution and the additive package still was very good. I plan to slowly increase my change interval to 7000 miles. Most of my miles are highway w/ very little city so that helps keep the oil in better shape.

I use mobil 1 fully synthetic extended performance 5w-30. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-En....aspx

Its rated for 15,000 miles of use. Most newer model european engines are rated at 15-20k/2 years oil change intervals. Thus I do not see any damage coming from 7,000 mile oil changes as long as the engine is broken in and you are using fully synthetic extended performance motor oil.
