It doesn't matter too much.

Synthetic is better, but if you switch to synthetic, you should never go back to regular, so you are kinda stuck with it.

As far as weight (10w30, 5w30, etc), use whatever is reccomended by the owners manual. Brand?

Castrol, Mobil 1, and others are good brands, but once again, brand isn't that critical. What is more important is to use good filters, use the correct amount of oil, and do frequent oil changes.

I checked the Pennzoil book for the recommended oil viscosity of the Nissan Altima, and the recommended oil is 5W30.

For the oil filter, you can use Pennzoil PZ 109, or you could go to Wal-Mart and look in the catalogue of Fram Filters.

You can use conventional or synthetic oil. It's just a matter of personal preference.

As a comparison, 10W30 is a little thicker at room temperature, but at operating temperature, the viscosity of the 5W30 and 10W30 is almost the same.

I use valvoline durablend on both of my cars. 10w-40.
