Oil change at the dealership vs. Private garage

I have owned the rogue for approximately 8 months now and I have taken it to the dealership for every oil change. Having it changed there, I am provided with a complete maintenance record which is one of the reasons why I take it there.

Every oil change cost between $55-$60 which I find extremely expensive since some places I know charge about half the price (for the same work done - oil filer and oil change).

Does anyone know if it will void the warranty if I have the oil changed at a private garage, or affect how strong my argument would be if I ever need to claim a warranty service on my engine?

Thanks

It will not void the warranty. Keep the track of your changes. You can even do the change by yourself. For ~$55 I think you could full synthetic oil change. I don't care about my warranty because it is only 36k miles. I know this car will go for that distance without major problems plus I'm already getting 25k miles in 1.5 year so I guess my warranty would expire soon.

How often should you change the oil? Every three months/3000 miles?

There is a maintenance schedule in your owners manual/service guide:

Oil changes are done every 3750mi (6000km) or 3 months as per Premium or Schedule1 Maintenance.

I change mine every 5000 miles and I use Mobil 1 which I buy at Wal*Mart in a 5qt. bottle for around $24. I take that to my favorite oil change place and pay around $18 for the labor and filter. $42 total, so not to shabby for a synthetic oil change.

I change my oil every 6000km (I'm from Canada so not sure how that converts to miles) and each time I've taken it to the dealership.

I'm approaching 18,000km so it will be my 3rd oil change and I'm hoping to take it to a private garage where I can save on cost and at the same time use my own oil.

sileung, 6000 Kilometers = 3728 Miles That sounds like a decent interval.

Is there any specific documentation I should ask for from the garage for my records?

Just keep your receipts. They will indicate the mileage the oil change was performed at. Should you ever have to make a warranty claim, Nissan will ask for maintenance records including oil changes... the receipts are your records.
