Oil Change at 42k miles - regular or full synthetic ?

Hi,

Should I switch to full synthetic in my Nissan Rogue 2013 at 42,000 miles?
if so should I use 0w-20 ? 5W-30?
should I look for the GM's dexos1 Gen2 ? this guy says it exceeds Nissan's https://forums.edmunds.com/discussion/5 ... oil-change

Shouldn't be a problem.

I use synthetic since day 1 for past 9 yrs on my rogue.

Use 5w-30.

I am presently using 0W-30 out of curiosity. Topped off with 5w20 that was lying around.

Have a stash of 24 Qts of 5w-30 waiting in the wings.

I'm in the middle of my long oci at around 10,000 miles.

Might change into another fram ultra filter I have waiting.

But I heard these are good for 20,000 miles.

I'll see my mood into the new year, since I drive in clean surroundings.

But everything is ready as need be.

Yah, I tried getting that gm dexos1 gen 2 , but it seems it is sold in europe.

I would need to use ebay Europe or something, too much hassle.

It kinda impressed me a little, and some dude did a ball bearing wear test and it was just as good as Amsoil signature series stuff.

Pretty expensive but not sold here, and I don't know the equivalent here so I don't want to get confused buying it.

If you can get it somehow, go for it!

Middle of oci, which means I'm around 10,000 miles presently and planning another 10,000 miles or more.

Your Owners Manual states: API Service AN
Energy Conserving

So what does that mean? Basically look for an oil either regular or synthetic that says it meets or exceeds API SN.

A quick look at Pennzoil's specs state that their 5W-30 regular oil meets or exceeds API SN.

As you can see the API SN standard is new as of 2011.

So just find an oil that meets API SN standard and you are good.

If you are doing the oil change yourself then I would say to use Synthetic.
If you are having a shop change the oil then it's up to you how much you want to spend. Honestly regular oil can easily last 4-5K.

I use the synthetic for winter only......since it is thinner it helps with those cold starts and the engine warms up faster witch is good for those short engine unfriendly trips. In summer that advantage is lost.

I use only non-synthetic 5w-30 since my first oil change. At 93k miles w/ oil changes about every 7.5k, it is working just fine. I think I sacrifice about 1 or 2 mpg using the 5w-30 instead of 0w-20 synthetic, but my lifetime mpg over 93k miles is 27 mpg according to the information display. If I used the synthetic oil, I'd probably extend my oil change interval to 12k miles or so. It probably works out to a wash, cost wise, but I prefer to change my oil more frequently.

I believe if you are doing a short oci, it won't really matter what you use.

Personally, I am fine with a long oci with a premium oil.

Today's oil protects better that I am not worried about oil related engine failure.

I believe the transmission will sh*t the fan before anything.

My last nissan had transmission failed. A 1990 maxima.

This happened right After dealership fixed a motor oil leak.

Engines will work forever with routine oil change, but the transmission will die much earlier out of nowhere.

I recommend synthetic oil. In my town a full synthetic oil change is $40-$60, while a conventional oil change is about half that much, around $20 to $30. Synthetic oil lasts about twice as long, so using it saves you the time of frequent oil changes. (Whether you change your own oil, or take it to a shop, it takes time to change your oil). Your time is worth something.
Synthetic oil makes your car engine last longer.

So, you can change your oil 2-4 times per year with conventional oil, or 1 or 2 times per year with synthetic. Its my opinion you dont "save" any money by getting cheap oil..you can do the math. I think the longer interval of oil changes and the extended life of your engine makes synthetic oil the preferred choice. I know of no "downsides" to using good oil, except that it costs more initially. However, longer term, synthetic oil saves you money.
