I've been tempted to run 0w30, but only in the winter up here when it gets down to -30C and lower. I know plenty of others who do it, and it certainly makes sense (especially if you've changed oil in a garage that's -30C... you can see how thick that stuff gets).
In the desert, do the temps get low enough to even be able to tell the viscosity difference between 0w30 and 5w30? I mean, I checked the weather forecast, you guys in Chandler, AZ have a high of 88F/30C today. I thought the first grade in a multi-grade oil (0w, 5w, 10w, etc) was tested in conditions around -25C to -35C (-13F to -31F).
At your ambient temperatures today (88F/30C) the viscosity of 0W30 and 5W30 would be pretty similar... at operating temp (185F/85C) they'd be identical. In theory, anyways, sounds like you switched from Mobil 1 to BG, which could also be the reason why the car sounds like it runs smoother.
Or maybe you just love your QX4 and think it sounds awesome.
