The way that my current setup is, I have the valve cover breather vented back to the intake. I'm going to change this as I don't wan't to have any oil fumes, or liquid going back to my new engine. I was thinking of putting a filter element on the valve cover breather, but will I get any oil coming out of it and getting all over the engine bay?

The second option is to get a catch can, I like this idea because I could see how much oil is blowing by. With this setup, would I need a filter on the can as well to avoid any contamination into the valve cover, I don't want this plumbed into the intake either.

What are your guys experiences with this?

Well with the catch tank you dont run any oil into the intake anymore, thats the whole purpose of a catch tank. You run the hose from the valve cover to the catch tank, then another hose to the intake pipe, any oil that comes into the tank stays there and you intake stays clean. You dont need a filter and if the motor is in good running condition you should see very little to no oil at all coming into the catch tank.

you must be thinking of the same type water separator filters that are typically used with air compressors.

will it function, yes.
