My friend owns a 2008 Nissan Rogue S and he installed a DIY oil catch can. He said that it's beneficial to the Rogue's engine. He's encouraging me to install one on my 2010 SL.

I was about to look this up when I thought that there might be something here already. Did anybody here have this on their Rogues? What are the benefits and are there any issues with it?

did you explain how its beneficial? or did he just spout out a bunch of forum rhetoric?

if you are going to install an official one: please do so, and take pics & post details for anyone else interested.

if you are going to go the 'ricer' way, and use a pneumatic air/oil separator from home depot, visit this page first: diy-oil-catch-can-for-rogue-t569607.html

no reason to lock it down, or to ignore catch cans. they have their place in the automotive world IF ITS:
  • A. the right equipment for the job.
    B. installed correctly.
things start spiraling out of control when morons want to use the wrong equipment for the job, or botch the job to the point where even 18yr old ebay-rice-racers would laugh.

Hmmm.... this sounds like a very debatable (or even touchy) subject. :chuckle:

only because we had a clown on here using pneumatic air compressor parts in his catch can build.
-so whats your plans?

I think I'll go for it. I'll buy a good one from eBay. Any idea what's the difference between the can with an air filter and the one without? Which one's better?

I have installed one on my 2014. I am driving with it for atleast 3 days already. I got a drop of oil & its really dark in colour. Maybe condensation & oil that is mixed. I will report back to see how much impurities it catches.

Please do..... I'm going to install one as well as soon as my lease ends on Aug this year and buy out the vehicle. I don't want to spend too much time and money on this one in case we decide to get a new one. But my wife said that 99% we'll keep this one. :chuckle:

When you post a pic, please show where the connections are like the PCV, etc. Thanks.

Definitely I will also post pics where the hoses connects to the PCV & the intake manifold. Not to worry just in case you will get a new Rogue. The 1st gen Rogue & the 2nd gen has the same size fittings for the PCV valve they are 3/8" .

This has been debated to no end.

To anyone who doesn't understand, when your engine is running, and with all the motion, heat, friction, etc...there is actual oil vapor in your engine. If this isn't vented I believe it can cause some real issues. The typical way this is handled is that (depending on throttle position) is that this gets routed back through your air intake to be burned again. I assume this is done for emissions perhaps, I don't know.

The oil catch can takes that vapor and catches it, so it can't get routed back through the engine.

At any rate, having an oil catch can does get some of that funk out. I ran one on a naturally aspirated Nissan Sentra for maybe 90k miles, and about every month or so there would be maybe 2 or 3 tablespoons of funky oil in there.

The real reason to get one, at least in my opinion, is that it basically eliminates that stuff going back into the engine, thus eliminating quite a bit of that funky buildup in the throttle body and intake.

Having said all of that, I would run my Sentra so freaking hard it was ridiculous. That girl didn't get driven nicely, I can tell you that. With the Rogue I am a little more relaxed, plus I am married and have a daughter now so not as much horsing around behind the wheel.

True! I always use Mobil 1 full synth oil since my 1st change oil. Then one time there was a very good deal for a Castrol Titanium full synth so I switched. I noticed that the car is losing oil and I was wondering where the oil actually go until I started reading about it.

I switched back to Mobil 1 and so far oil level seem to be stable compare to Castrol. After a good amount of reading. It looks like an oil catch can really is beneficial to the engine. I'm a gentle driver but after the Castrol experience and reading about oil catch can. I thought this would help a lot whether you are a gentle driver or a racer.

I'd like to see an actual oil catch can at work on a Rogue. I'd like to see how much oil it collects after such and such kms and how it was installed. 2008 - 2013 models as the 2014's might have a different PCV placements. Hopefully somebody in the forum has one installed on theirs and can post it.

I agree with you in regards about Castrol. If you read some articles in regards about Castrol at bobistheoilguy.com . Mobil1 is a good motor oil.

I agree with Black BL5 too. To add to that as I have read in another forum. I believe its a Subaru forum. The oil catch Can can also help to keep the octane number consistent. As because if the air fuel mixture is diluted with blowby gas from the crankcase mix with oil from the pcv system the octane value decreases. The oil catch can will also help prevent build up of carbon on top of the intake valves. As we all know that carbon build up on top of the intake valves will absorb fuel & lean out the air fuel mixture going to the combustion chamber, thus you will loose power. When the 1st generation of GDI engines or Gasoline Direct Injection engines they had this problem. As nothing is sprayed on top of the intake valves to keep it clean. This lead to carbon build up on top of the intake valves & restricting air flow. I will attach an article in regards about this.

I guess this is a 2014 model. It looks different under the hood.

Yes, it is the 2014. I measured the diameter of the pcv valve & the orifice that goes to the intake manifold that they are the same for the 1st gen & 2nd gen. They are both 3/8 ".
