Oil capacity for QX4 2002 with 3.5L

I read my owner's manual for oil capacity and it states 5.25 quarts of oil. I changed the oil and filter today. I drained the oil for about twenty minutes. I poured in 5.25 quarts and the dipstick is now about a half inch past full mark. Any ideas?

Maybe your dipstick is bent? Check the oil tomorrow, maybe there's just residual oil in the dipstick tube causing an inaccurate reading.

On don't think when you drain the oil, all of the oil in the engine comes out. There for when you poor in 5.25 qts you have filled it past it's capacity. Last time I changed my oil I made the same mistake, I was not paying attention and poured nearly all of the 5.25+ qts (AutoZone exclusive) of Mobile 1 into the engine. But it is a pretty good rule of thumb to do about 4.25-4.5 qts and then add as you need.

In your case, like me. I drained the oil and refilled.

maybe unscrew the drain plug quick, drain some, then put it back on quick?, yea it might be a mess but you wont waste your money getting another batch of oil.

Yep, I slowly unscrewed the drain plug until a trickle came out. I waited about two minutes and then checked the level again. It took two times but the second time I checked, the level was perfect. A lesson learned.

I've always put in 5.25 qts in my '01, and it comes out perfect.

Did you run it before you measured it? You need to run it to fill the filter and oil passages.
