I'm sure I burn some but I honestly rarely check the level and just have a low OCI instead.

My '06 M45 Sport burns about 1 qt every 3,500 miles. Sometime a little less. I notice there is more when I've been driving on the highway more vs around town. It worries me some but Ive had other cars that burn some also and lasted 2k miles +. I just add some when it gets about 1/2 qt low.

Seems this is a known issue with all versions of the Infiniti V-8 engines. Not everyone has reported it, but so many that I reckon it isn't unusual. Just make sure you keep up with it by checking levels often. I remember a post form a member who said changing to synthetic oil caused a significant drop in oil loss. Not sure if that's actually science or perception.

I believe much of the oil burn in the 4.5 is the pcv system pulling so much oil vapor, I recall hearing about intake manifolds just lined with oil residue and of course pulling that into the cylinders every time the valves open. I don't know if its a condition of a bad system that never got improved or something different. What I have heard is if a proper catch can setup is put on it reduces oil consumption to more normal/manageable levels.
On my own car I found I was losing 1 quart every 1000 miles I disconnected both vacuum hoses, one in front of the engine behind the throttle body, and one in the intake piping between the maf and the throttle body, I blocked off the larger pipe at the back of the drivers side head and I put a cloth filter on the pcv crossover in front of the engine, that had gone to the intake manifold behind the throttle body. I find that I am now only using 1 quart for every 4,000 or so miles. I am also still losing some out that covered cross over pipe I can see the oily residue on the cloth and on the engine under it. I will be putting in a real catch can at some point and see what difference that makes.

Interesting project.
I don't think my consumption is excessive compared to the other cars I've owned and maintained, but I'm paying attention.

Are your ideas on stopping the loss from the oil pan or just preventing oil from getting into the combustion chamber( a la catch can)?

Right now! I really dont understand the dipstick for starter. It is very confusing!!!. I check my oil every Sat morning before I start the car. I notice my oil drops to the middle point or lower after a month from an oil change or me topping it up. Sometimes
I have to add 1 1/2 Litre every 1,000km. I have changed the valve cover gasket (the black rubber thing), Changed the O-ring around the oil filter, Changed the PCV valve, I am considering change my oil type or getting he car inspected. I have been using 5w30 Castrol edge synthetic blend. I want to try high mileage oil. I have about 167,000km on the dash right now.

My car burns quite a bit of oil, I'd say at least 2 quarts between oil changes (3750 miles). I make sure to keep an eye on my oil levels and top off as needed. That said, I just switched to high mileage synthetic blend as opposed to just synthetic blend this past oil change. Will see what that does. The debate on whether or not high mileage oil makes a difference goes on and on and I can't get an answer as to whether or not it makes a difference.

07 M45 90k on the clock. No leaks or blue smoke at all. Have only used 5w30 synthetic blend previously. PCVs are new.
