not stressing about this, but was wondering if there is any worth to an additive like LUCAS Oil Additive. i think another member on the site has mentioned using a small amount with an oil change. also, how does everyone feel about 15w-50 weight mobil 1, especially for the summer???

BG MOA (new name BG 111) is good, that's about it.

hey i tried that Lucus oil additive. thats good stuff man...i live in new england and it gets really cold up here at night and in the morning. before i used to have a really bad problem with dry starts. so i went to autozone and has sopdadope hook me up with a bottle. used it as directed on the bottle, engine sounds smoother and never had a problem with dry starts since.

you should go to autozone and check out the display have for it; its pretty cool...

maxi30t, is that the display with the crank thing with the oil at the bottom to show how the lucas oil coats the wheels better? jeff

Its that exact display.if u turn it LOTS and FAST tho (like an engine would, but no one does in store) you see the side w/the additive turn milky. As it emulsifying the air.Or said a different way the additive is overwhemling the oils anti-foaming package.Which is bad.

The main reason I use BG 111 is to add back the Zinc that Mobil 1 deleted from their Syn to help prolong cat life.Ok since my Q still doesn't burn significant oil.

You must know Chemistry and Turbology or additives can be a waste at best or cause harm at worst..........all depends on the formula [additives added] of the oil brand you are using.

Just changing the oil every 90 days will do much more than any additives.

thanks guys, i have a friend, who is a mechanic, recommend the Lucas trans additivie, and didn't know if the oil additive might be of any benefit. i won't be using this, and yes, i plan on the 90 day oil change w/ mobil 1. will look into the bg additive though. my hats off to the experts here. realize now that those infomercials can be so convincing to the untrained eye, but once you add a little science/chemisty to the mix,,,,it all falls apart. BTW, they all add a money back guarntee, which of course seems to validate the product, but how many average people can tell if their engine is falling apart before the damage is irreversible. jeff

Last time I looked at AmsOil contents, they were very high on zinc. That may be a significant part of their "secret" to good performance on "3-ball" test.

Its also why they are not an API oil.

AMSOIL is good stuff partially because they didnt bother following the API guidelines cuz a better performance can be had with the extra ZDDP.

Other Oils like MOBIL1 have now used new additives ("moly") as anti-wear agents to subsititute for the "lost" (or lesser amounts allowed) zinc.

Dennis, You mentioned you use BK and it's okay since your engine is not burning oil. If you engine was burning oil would you still use it or recommend something else?

curious

This thread reminds me:

I hardly ever force my personal opinions onto otheres here on this board, but I'll go on the record to say that Motul motor oil is THE best oil available for passenger cars out there, no IMO's about it.

Very rare to see any tested results of this motor oil but a grassroots auto-x'er out here swears by Motul. Verified by independent testing, Motul 10w40 was shown to have superior anti-foaming and viscosity agents. Head-to-head against the best off-the-shelf offerings, Motul was proven to have higher zinc content and lower phosphorus PPM than ANY store-bought motor oils which included Mobil 1, Amsoil, Redline AND Royal Purple. Translation: Motul is some good ****E.

I agree with Sope MOTUL really has no known weaknesses.

But when recommending oils I like to stick to off-the shelf oils, cuz thats what PPL will buy.

Even Redline and AMSOIL availability take too much extar effort too buy in my opnion for the bulk of members to go to them.

I think MOTUL is about $8+ per quart when you can find it.Other rare hi end oils exist, OMEGA (much more than even MOTUL).

But sope isnt teh only member who swears by it we have a NICO member in Dominican republic who likes it a lot too.

If you change oil every 90 days almost anything will work well. But if you live in extra cold areas or extra hot areas synthetics work better.

Using something like MOA adds the eqivalent of $1.50 per quart. Less expensive than Mobil 1 alone x 6 quarts.

When you burn oil via rings or bad valve stem seals.......metals like zinc and phosporus attack the catalytic convertor rhodium/platnium substrate decreasing its effectiveness resulting in higher emissions.

The whole thing is a trade off: cat life and replacement cost vs engine life...........not really significant until over 150,000 miles.

The problem is inexpensive replacement cats have very thin substrate coatings and only work well for a few years vs oem Q's 10-15 year life.http://www.corning.com/environ...2.asph ... on...3.asp

Even more scarey if you can believe it [true?]http://www.keelynet.com/biology/cfs.htm
