I went out to start my car this morning and it started at first and then died. Now, it will not start. I can hear the pump in the back seat, it buzzes just for a second or so like it always does, and then it makes a clicking noise while trying to turn it over. Is this classic fuel pump???? It hasnt had one, and I have about 130K on it. Also, if it is the pump is Carter a good brand to replace it with, and also how long does it take to replace it yourself??? Thanks

No to anything but OEM on FP.

You will need a new O ring also.

I would suspect your starter relay first.

You are definately due for a new pump. I put a carter pump in my 1990 a few years back and haven't had a problem but OEM is always preferred. If you know what you are doing you can replace it in a couple of hours. Just be super careful when setting the o-ring and removing the fuel sending unit as it quite fragile.

Your pump is due, but if its buzzing, its alive.

How old is your battery?

Check the fuel pump control unit while you're in there. Quite often they go out in pairs.

Same thing happened to me and as I posted on another thread.

-Floor gas and crank car for 30seconds holding the cars all the way down.-If car don't crank then could be something with the FP or the fuse.

Like Jesda said if it buzzing it's alive.

Does your engine crank or just click when you turn the key?

If the engine is not cranking, it has nothing to do with the fuel pump (this is obvious for some, but not sure how car savvy you are)

If its clicking, the relay is probably fine too. seach my previous starter issue posts for my relay testing method.

Mine did the same thing, intermittent starting deteriorating to no starting and just a click.

The starter was pooched.

bottom line, you may need a new fuel pump, but that would have nothing to do with a no crank situation

Ok. We floored the accelorator and turned her over and she is running. I have been driving her cautiously for the last few days and it seems ok, but something is definately up. Seems like a lack of power, especially around 40-50 MPH. We have recently changed the fuel filter, and the MAF sensor, what else could it be? I am curious what was wrong with your car???

ThanksAlicia

You must measure fuel pressure after the fuel filter. 34 psi at idle, 43psi at WOT. Tape gauge to windshield and drive.
