So this may be a real scrub question, but i've read everything and talked to people and i still don't understand wheel offsets...it just can't figure it out ha, is 40 a bad offset? whats the deal with negative and positives? i get it that it deals with where the wheel attaches in location to the center, but im confused..can someone break it all down?

I'm too lazy/drunk to hunt down that one single image that explains it all, but seriously this has been beaten to death over and over again. Try the friendly search button.

30-40 positive offset is FWD territory, as the inner part (rear) of the center of the wheel (where it mates to the car) is more towards the outside of the wheel (front). If my understanding is correct, FWD cars use a higher offset wheel setup so the track width isn't too wide causing problems with the drive wheels as they also turn the car, but I don't know **** about anything so take it with a grain of salt.

Ah, fack it, search!

Ok thanks for the info guys, and thanks for those links Slappy, i've read most of everything on here about offsets and YES i searched, but that 2nd link just helped me understand it a lot. So is it a good idea to stay away from offsets in the 30's?

It's a good idea to stay away from offsets higher than 30 because on our cars, which are front engine rear drive, they get sunk into the wheel wells and it looks like crap.

Lower offsets, such as 20 positive and below, tend to be more flush with the wheel wells, and widen the track width which improves handling IMHO.

In my opinion, 30-40 stay away. 20 is usually a fair balance depending on wheel width. True ballas go +0 or negative :P

It also depends on the width of the wheel. Nothing wrong with say a 16x7 +30 et. It just wont be super jdm tyte flush. Flushness is mostly an image thing. 90% of these kids these days dont know what scrub radius is.
