from my understanding offset is measured in mm from the part where the wheel bolts on to your suspension in either direction for example:

0 offset = ------l------- offset = ----l--------+ offset = --------l----

so i dont think that low offsets means brake clearance gets smaller because wheels can be constructed to clear brakes with low offsets. but the lower the offset the more the wheel gets pushed towards the fender so you'll start having to worry about rubbing fenders. but yeah this issue confuses me too, but this is just my understanding i could be wrong.

Phanatikz32 is right and that was a very good visual I might add...

Proper offset wheels can make or break a car in the looks department. I recommend visiting http://www.rimtuck.com to see lots of setups and what works well for our cars...

ok so 40 would be the zero and then say i were to pick out wheels with a +20 they would be be farther away from the brakes and suspension

Here's a good article.

Please make sure you're aware if which side of the wheel is "inner" as you read through and look at the images.

no your stock rims are +40 meaning the mounting surface of the wheel is 40mm positive or to the outside of the center line of the wheel. but yea on a lower offset wheel your wheel gets pushed to the outside and away from your suspension but not necessarily your brakes because your wheels still have to mount to the spindle. this is why if you were to get a wheel like the volk te37's in a high offset they look flat and if you get a low offset they concave because your pulling the mounting surface inward and the rest of the wheel outward.
