in the general section, there is a pic request for a 240 with +43 offset rims.

What exactly does offset mean? What sizes of offset are there? What is best/reccomended for S13? And lastly.. does anyone have a pciture of a +43 offset?

Thanks

Offset is how much the rims "stick out" from the car's wheel wells, I think. The higher the offset, the more "sunken in" the rims appear, and the higher offset rims stick out more from the hub. That's why offsets of +40 or lower are better for our cars because it looks better and it provides more clearance for brake upgrades and such. I think the perfect offset would be from +30 to +38.

ok... but i read the FAQ says the stock wheel is a +40..I also found this"http://z31.com/images/offset.gif" and this "http://toy4two.home.mindspring.com/offset.html" in the FAQ (shoulda looked there first..) and they helped me understand..

Using the second link i find this "The clearance from stut housing to the inside of the wheel will be 16mm LESS The outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 10mm"

So i guess i'd need a 15mm Spacer.. if i can stomach my wheels comming out 2.5cm.. I would still love to see a picture..

Uh I dunno.

I just learned about offsets recently, and I still don't know how to explain it fully.

all offset is is the distance from the centerline of the wheel to the mounting point(hub bore and lug holes), just like that illustration.

the offset you have to run depends mostly on the width of the wheel. a 43mm offset will be fine for a 6.5 or even a 7" wheel...but may require spacers to clear coilovers, as a rule of thumb, for the front, you dont want the tire/wheel any closer to the sock than it was stock, to be sure to clear coilovers...I think 240_Keyy has 7" wide 37mm offset konigs and they worked ok, but got way close to the coilovers...I run 17x7.5 in a 30mm offset, its flush with the edge of the car, and doesnt come any closer to the strut housing.-chet

That depends on what width wheel you want to run.

EDIT: To expand a little, the "optimum" offset will be different for a 7" wide wheel, as oposed to an 8" wide wheel and so on. Look in the FAQ at the top of the page, there is a good offset calculator in there. If you dont understand offset's, pick up the new Super Street, they have a desent explanation of wheel/tire related stuff, including offset.

Woah, calm yourself. My second post I said that I read it and it helped me to understand! I think I now understand that offset really doesnt matter.. thats what spacers are for. But i still want to see a picture of a +43 car properly spaced to clear the shocks.

uhm...thas the "tape and chewing gum" solution, yes. if you want it done right, just buy the correct offset..that way you wont strain your hubs, wheel bearings, suspension or wheel studs.'

I wasnt critisizing you, Im just sick of the "whats the optimum offfset fo X" questions. I need more information to help anyone...-chet

think of it like this....

larger the offset #...closer it gets to the strutsmaller the # it gets closer to the lip of the wheel well

Assuming we're disuccing a 17x7 wheel. A 0 offset wheel will more than likely stick out too much. A 43 offset is stock, so it should fit fine...but as said above may rub on aftermarket suspenion (and depends on how wide a tire you're running).

If you want an agressive look to your car, with the wheels moved out to the edges properly without spacers, you'll want to look into a 28-35 offset.

Lastly if u want an example of a car with a 17x7.5 wheel look at SCC project Silvia with the CE28's on it. 43mm offset and 245/45 Azenis...in the front they had to use a 5mm spacer to clear the suspension.

Note: most wheels you see in magazines are FF offset wheels and will look crappy on your car...only a handful look decent on an S platform.

Ok, can a 17x7 wheel with a 42 offset fit fine on a stock 89 240 or will it need spacers.

17x7 with a 42 offset would fit fine butthe rim would sink in to the the car's wheel wellyou wouldn't want thatyou may have to stick it out a bit with a 5mm or 10mm spaceri think you need a 10 mm spacer, but not sureif you have 17x17.5 w/ 42mm offset, a 5 mm spacer would be fine+42mm offset on 7.5" wide rims are usually the spec for FF cars (front engine, front wheel drive)

240's w/ a 17x7.5 rims looks best with a +37mm offsetagain all rims have different offset based on their design but it is roughly the same. usually varries from 35-38mm offsetwell goodluck~Joe~

you're a moron. please go read some things about wheels, like the FAQ and look around before you tell people that all wheels have "roughly the same" offset.-chet
