Winter climate itself takes it's toll on cars...I do see the odd one on the road through the winter and just shake my head when I see them. As you point out a second vehicle in order and I'd never use my 300 as a primary driver.
Another thing to point out is that when you have a (non-Z) daily driver, it makes you appreciate the Z more. Every time you get in it, it feels new again to you.

Common? I've had over a half dozen Z's and never had a heater core problem nor replaced an alternator, and never a problem with the locks. For that matter, about the only thing that ever causes heater core issues is when people use that "Stop Leak" crap in the cooling system. And worse, this means there was likely a problem elsewhere...usually the water pump seal. I would see if the antifreeze (in the radiator) is brownish looking. If so, you have your work cut out for you.
But I do like the car. Just be careful as to what appearance mods you do...as 2+2's don't lend too well to the trendy stuff...stay traditional (and OE), for example G35 wheels, 99' tails/spoiler, etc.
