Another page taken from ClubRSX. This is pretty much the ONLY forum I visit here on NICO. We can't always talk about NIC, can we?

Any here into High-Def (HD DVD and/or BD)? What do you think of it, worth the upgrade from DVD?

This is my other interest. Spent way too much upgrading my HomeTheater and lost by selling my 600+ DVD's for HD! bembols.tripod.com

You sold ur DVD's for HD-DVDs?....You probably didn't get my email, but I was on another forum concerning touchless car washes and stumbled upon one of your posts....I saw a link you had to your website...I've seen your Blueray Collection....and your hometheatre, looks really good, neways, I'm into Bluerays cause i recently bought a PS3....but I still buy Movies on DVD which aren't available on BD...(Transformers!) But then again I'm a SONY fanatic...lol.....but I'm not planning on getting rid of the DVD's I already own....I spent so much time collecting and spent so much money on......watching them in 480P isn't so bad....I know nothing beats 1080 or 720p...but I personally don't think it's worth to buy the same movies all over again for the sake of better resolution.... PS - Unless it's a re-release and has some crazy collectors edition s-h-i-T

I was at futureshop a few weeks ago just looking around and i saw a 1080P with a blueray player, and i thought i could take my hand a grab the image. My tv is probably 10+ years old so i plan on upgrading to a 1080p tv very soon.

my parents bought a 50" plasma for down stairs and one for up stairs, both are 1080p (same kind of TV). my dad bought me a PS3 a few months ago on my 19th birthday but the only blu ray movie i have is casino royal and i only have 2 games for PS3 lol i havent really had time for it lately. i need to get my brother to hook up the surround sound to the PS3 cuz right now its just hooked up to the DVD player. i dont really use the blue ray too much but the picture looks a lot better on HD channels vs regular channels on tv.

if you have extra money then yes it is nice and very enjoyable but if you don't then no i don't think its worth the upgrade. if my dad didn't buy the TV's and my PS3, no way id buy it with my own money lol

i heard BD is supposed to be better then HD. is that true? are they both like the same quality? is HD better then BD?

I just got a Toshiba HD-D3 HD DVD player from my wife as Christmas gift, I hooked it up to my hometheater, I really like it, I think is well worth it. My wife paid $185 in the local Costco, it came with 2 movies and the HDMI cable, it is pretty good deal.

Brembol, why did you sell your DVD's? Both the Blu ray and HD DVD player will play SD dvd as well, and both of them do upscaling, I keep all my SD dvd collection.

In regards of HD vs Blu Ray, which one is better? I have done some research and have seen a lot of valid arguments on both sides. But in my own opinion, in terms of picture quality, they are very similar. I am planning to buy a PS3, so I can have both formats.

I will not buy movies until the end of the format war. In the meantime I will use Netflix to rent movies.

Sony KDS-60A3000 SXRD TV (Not convinced 120Hz RR does anything, but its got it)...60"

XBOX360 Elite w/ HD-DVD player (HDMI and 1080p)

PS3 (use as BD player it absolutley is the worst VG console I have ever purchased still not a single game worth buying..YET)

Onkyo 6.1 Surround system (1000W, little older but haven't seen reason to upgrade)

AND YES HD-DVD and BR both put out 1080/24p...in native formatwhich isn't as good as 1080/60p but hey it ain't bad and is what film is well filmed in.

It seems as though they are getting more backing in the HD-DVD / BR war but I think this will be a longer drawn out battle than the VHS/BetaMAX war. Sony may never learn that proprietary is just not a good idea..i.e. BetaMAX, UMD, MagicGate and now BD... but all in all SONY's has come back in the quality department as far as hardware.

Anxious to see Laser and OLED TV's...I'm on my 4th bigscreen HDTV

there doesn't seem to be enough support for hd-dvd... it's a shame since I have the hd-dvd player add-on for my xbox360

I guess I won't have a choice but to buy the ps3 for it's bluray capabilities.

Major HD-DVD Backers: Paramount, Warner Bros, Universal, Microsoft, Toshiba, Dreamworks, HP, Acer, DVD-Forum, Intel, New-Line Cinema, HBO, Venturer, NEC,

Major BD Backers: Hitachi, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and Thomson, Disney, HP, Acer, Paramount, 20th Century FOX, LionsGate, MGM

You'll see that some companies support both formats, I wouldn't say BD is definitely going to win, it'll be along battle...

Doesn't bother me I have both...

HD-DVD's have come way down in price and now with the Combo Format you can get 1 disc with both HD-DVD and DVD on the same...

either way the Pic Quality and Sound quality are essentially identical

Good Comptettion is good for we the consumer...

I'm bummed - I got Planet Earth (HD) for Christmas and the first disk is scratched and locks up the Xbox360 during the Mountains episode. The other disks are fine but I'm not sure if the Xbox360 HD drive scratched it or if it was like that out of the box as I didn't check it until after I had the problem. Disk is scratched in a circular pattern around the outside first 1/4". I have heard of the Halo 3 disks being scratched but not Planet Earth. Should I contact Discovery.com for a new disk??

I got a PS3 fro Christmas also, but I haven't gotten any BlueRay disks to check picture quality but games look great.

Equipment is a Sony Bravia 50A3000 SXRD for the Xbox360 and a Panasonic 42PHD8UK 42" Plasma TV for the PS3 - both look fantastic so far

they're both Hitachi. the guy at the store said something about, LCD has a quicker response time or something (i forgot exactly) and that LCD is better for games but plasma is better for watching movies. he said LCD, if you get close, the picture doesn't look good, you have to watch it from far but Plasma is different. im no expert in TVs though. so what are the pros and cons in LCD vs Plasma?

Why are you saying that HD DVD is not putting out 1080P? Where did you learned that?

Besides, from a distances of 10 feet, I can bet anyone that he will not be able to tell the difference between 2 TVs, 1 showing 1080p and the other 1080i.

the only thing giving out 1080p is blue ray

you are rightyou cannot tell the difference at all!

The first generation of U.S./Japanese HD DVD players could only output the 1080p content via 1080i signal and required 3:2 pulldown deinterlacing in a display to reconstruct the original 1080p signal

for example,my tv tells me what signal it is showingwhen i watch blue ray, it tells me its 1080pwhen i watch hd it tells me its 1080i

Uh, HD-DVD IS 1080p (some cheaper players can only put out 1080i)...but the film is 1080/24p...look on the back of any HD-DVD, oh and I can personally guaratee you that my HD-DVD player, XBOX-360 and PS3/BD are all 1080p direct input to my KDS-60A3000 SXRD TV...

Here's one example, Silly's...

http://www.crutchfield.com/App...p=171

Dude I have had an HDTV since the only channel available was PBS, trhis is my 4th big screen alone...I know my ****e"plays HD DVD high-definition discs (selectable 720p/1080i/1080p output available through HDMI output; 720p/1080i output also available via component video on discs lacking ICT copy-protection)"

True.

HD-DVD and BluRay are both 1080pizzle.

Regular TV, DirectTV and Cable are currently broadcasting in 1080i.

That's all I know.

-I could be wrong. I was wrong before.

That is correct, it is very unlikely that you will see a 1080p broadcast anytime soon, the bandwidth is like the quad-laser, enormous,

Oh, and just FYI D* an E* (DirecTV, Dishnetwork) actually do not push true 1080i either, it is a compressed version some call HD-Lite (either 1440x1080i E* or 1280x1080i D*) but yor Satellite Box will upconvert to full 1080i or 720p depending on station and broadcast.

Oh and I really didn't cuss in the previous post I used a less offensive form of the word poop, sorry.

Eduardo, I think I know where you're coming from. I do recall that back in 2005 when HD DVD and Blue ray were first breaking ground, that HD DVD players had a maximum 1080i output. As is the case with some lower grade HD DVD players today!

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ol...98783

This player was one of the first generations of HD DVD out there! Blue ray disc players always had 1080p output (hence the heftier price tag).

I think everyone has made some good points! Especially about the fact that cable is broadcast in 1080i, and will most likely not change for a minimum of a decade or so. Also, the fact that 9.9 / 10 of us can NOT tell the difference between a 1080i and 1080p signal from viewing distance!

All in all, if anyone wanted to be really smart about it, you'd get one of the hybrid players that support BOTH HD DVD and BLU RAY DISC! That way, no matter which format loses, you still win!!

Is this the beginning of the end for HD DVD?

Paramount is leaving the HD DVD exclusivity camp, following Warner's lead!

I got the A3 for $118 delivered with 10 dvds from bestbuy... (slickdeal)...

Anyways from all the hoopla, it seems blueray may win... im really upset, not because of my investment, but because SONY hasnt made quality products since the internet has come around IMHO... No standardization amongst their resolution... just feels like another ipod...

I bought a ps3 last year and have bought a couple of blue-ray movies since then. I own over 450 regular dvd's and I am also into home-theatre systems. But, I personally think only GREAT movies should be bought in Hi-def.. (exp. you purchase 300 on blue-ray not Harold and Kumar..lol) I buy most movies on normal def. unless I find them to be "GREAT" movies and I will step it up to blue-ray..
