I can't believe it hasn't been made yet...
Well I have been playing this game for about a 1 month and I have had a blast.

Minecraft is a sandbox building game currently in development by Markus Persson, also known as "Notch". It was conceived as a clone of the game Infiniminer, although Persson wants the gameplay to be more similar to that of Dwarf Fortress. The game is written in Java, using the LWJGL game library.
http://miniurl.com/56134

How it works is when you start a new game your entire world is randomly created and as you explore your world will be randomly created. This allows for some amazing scenery!

What is the point of the game? Stay alive and be creative.
During the day you mine for resources and at night baddies come out.
The graphics are bare bones to say the least but the community is growing rapidly!

There are 3rd party skins for your player as well as texture maps. You can play on a browser or with the exe. Check it out and I hope NICO recieves it with open arms!

History:
A game developed by one man; his name is Markus Persson, aka "Notch". Since the game has blown up he has hired some help but for the most part it is a 3 or 5 man team with currently making $250,000-a-day!

I finally broke the hold of the Mine. I am finally able to do homework once again, and go outside. To live, to love. My roommate sadly was a casualty of...the Mine.

The Penny Arcade strip summarizes my feelings playing the game perfectly the first time haha

Jeez, I was getting worried that no one on NICO played this game...

I don't get hooked too bad. I can play all day, 30mins or not at all. I prefer playing MW2 online with buddies but if no one is around and there isn't anything to do, I Minecraft. Have you by any chance used Cartograph or INVEdit?

I used INVEdit and the game is ruined for me now. Don't use it. I don't build anything because it is just too easy to mod your inventory.
Cartograph is amazing! When i first started I explored and started building my base far off from my spawn but once I died, I had no idea how to get back. I found my original base after 2 months of not being able to find it and all my wood axes and shovels were still sitting there at the bottom of this hole. I nearly shed a tear.

I played the Hell out of Minecraft for a while. Then one day after putting about 4 hours into one particular world, the game crashed on me. When minecraft crashes, it keeps some recent changes and loses others. I went back into that world to find it a mess, hours of work destroyed. It really killed my desire to go back to it. For some reason the game hasn't been so addictive since then.

That's...a lot of work for something you can do with a couple clicks. Grab NBTForge, load up your map, and set your block of choice as spawn point. Quick, simple, and no guessing about coordinates.

I think NBT Forge is for Indev files only.

Nice to see some clarification. I'm also glad to see my gobs and gobs of torches around my forts and excavations will be turning into permalanterns automatically.

No, it's the creative person's wet dream. You have a unique world in which to explore, create, etc. as you wish.

So it's just a world creator then?

By extension, this would mean any game without loot and leveling is crap. Last I checked, not every game is an action RPG. If you bought a Formula 1 game, would you complain about that not having loot?

You're absolutely right: none of that DOES pertain to minecraft. So if you want that, look elsewhere. Diablo's a great fallback for hack-and-slash and goldz yo. Still one of my favorite games. I generally don't confuse it with Minecraft.

Not "just". But that's the basis for the game's appeal.

This is the kind of game, like Animal Crossing, or the Sims, that doesn't give you goals, it gives you a world and lets you do what you please with it.

It's like Legos, or playing "forts" as a kid. There's no set story, no set goal, nothing like that. But you can create your own. The world has established rules and you can work within them as you like. Monsters come out after dark, so you need shelter. To get a decent shelter you need tools. For tools, you need materials. But you don't have to build a shelter. You can just explore. Or you can build yourself a fortress and mine the entire contents out of a mountain.

That's just the singleplayer aspect. The multiplayer side tends to be more about construction in a different mode, which allows you to place infinite bricks without mining for materials. That's where stuff like the giant Darwinian, the working computer, the big pokemon card, etc. come from.

It doesn't just "create" a world. It's not a one-time thing. The world's got life to it, and generates progressively as you explore it. It's not a static "create and forget" kind of situation. As a player, you'll change the world you exist in, and the world itself is dynamic.

It's really not something you can explain. You have to play it. If it's not your kind of game, there's not much anyone can say to change that. But if it IS your kind of game, it can be a lot of fun.

This is probably the best attempt at getting Minecraft's appeal across in words:

From a value per dollar standpoint this is probably the best $13 I've ever spent on a video game.

So I'm pretty much the pinnacle of "asocial gamer" and, as such, I LOVE Minecraft. I've only played about 5 - 6 hours, but for those of you who don't really get the point of the game, I think the point you are missing is that there IS no point. It's a sandbox game with no metaplot.

I play Minecraft to unwind, to relax. It's just me, my pick, my sword, my bow, my axe, my shovel, my torches, my ladders, my crafted blocks and the mysteries the earth holds. I love building, and this scratches that itch the way virtually no other game can.
