Sad story, the only thing missing is the good conclusion, as of yet. Hopefully they'll get the SOB . . . I can somewhat relate to this guy. I bought my 240 for $2,000 with a strange engine noise that the guy said was a valve spring (yep, ignorance). I tried to have him take it to a mechanic, but that didn't work out, and I didn't persue that any further, so I just bought the car. 3 months later, engine dies on my way to school on a *VERY* cold New England day. My guess is that the original engine had the timing chain issue, and coolant leaked into the block, and sat there for a while. The original engine had a new front cover installed, which should've been a big signal to me, much like a few things about that M3 . . . a $3,000 engine rebuild and install later, it's running, with the chain rattling at idle. :-) Some people just have lousy luck . . . let's just hope it improves for this guy.

I've been on that end too, why is it that selling a car brings out the worst in people?

Oh, and the Cliff Notes for those who don't feel like reading:

Keith Scott from Washington finds "nice" M3 in Florida

Calls owner Montoya in Florida, Montoya says car is perfect, come and see.

Scott buys one-way ticket, thinking he could drive the car home.

Scott sees car, and is disapointed, and Montoya is less than helpful in any pre-sale matter.

Nonetheless, Scott decides to buy car, gives Montoya $10,000 in cash.

Scott stays in Florida for a while after purchasing car, and notices big problems, contacts Montoya in effort to rectify problems, but Montoya is no help.

After working with the DMV and police, Scott finds out that the car is stolen. Montoya not responsive at this point.

Police impound car, and after expenses, Scott is out over $12,000.Scott later finds others who have had sour dealings with Montoya, who help him in his case.

As of now, the case is unresolved, although Scott believes that the case will be resolved, it will just take time.

It is a long story, so excuse the long summary . . .

i like your gut feeling idea, never fails, but think about it, a 1989 m3 in 'perfect' condition for 1o,5oo, the guy wanted one for a while, very hard find, somehwat dissappointed with car once he looked at it, but still, how could he pass it up, i probably wouldve done the same thing in his position, i know how it is to want something that badly, but yes, always go with your gut feeling

The circumstances by which Montoya got the car are probably suspicious in themselves. The place where he stated he got the car from had no record of the car ever being there. Montoya probably isn't questioning where he got the car, because he probably knows he acquired the car through illegal means, at least in my opinion.

... still reading but so far...

"I later heard on the news that they had found a chop shop just around the corner from the hotel, complete with a marijuana growing operation, and a stolen semi with $85k of stolen COSCO furniture. It’s a nice place you guys got here. Like a f*&@#g sewer hole."

WPB is a shi7 hole, with a lot of rich basturds.. funny tho.. and tino, that guy did know that it was stolen, because at the DMV he made the story up and he didnt have his name on the title.. there are alot of stolen cars that make their way to south FL but most of em go on cargo ships to south america...

Anyone who buys and sells cars for a hobby like I have been doing since 1970, eventually learns to look past the hype and see the car as it really is. It took buying a '66 T-Bird that looked great but was completely made of Bondo, a '70 Lotus Elan with a completely rusted backbone frame (Hey, it's fiberglass, it can't rust!), and a '67 Fiat Dino Coupe with what turned out to be no oil pump to start to learn. I lost $15K on those three cars alone.

Look in the Datsun section and count the number of "I got a really nice (Fill in name here) that only has a little rust". The majority have terminal rust and will never run again.

It is very easy to only see what the car could be instead of what the car is.

Also, never sell your car to a friend. Unless you're 200% certain of its mechanicals.

I had a rock solid 1988 Mazda 929 I almost sold to friends of mine. They almost bought it, but a couple weeks later the head gasket went out, along with the timing belt/tensioner, and it needed a valve job all of a sudden after that incident. I didnt see any of it coming.

Cost me $900 to get running again, but with a dead cylinder. It wasn't the energetic luxury sedan it once was. I ended up taking my losses and selling it, barely running, to a local used dealer for $650.

Imagine the hit I would have taken had I sold it to a friend.
