I swear it, I was on, and everything lined up. I must have turned the crank 5 times to make sure!!! Could a loose tensioiner cause you to jump a tooth? Now I need to do a damage assessment. I was thinking to re do the timing belt, get everything back together, and do a compression test, and that should tell me if there is any internal damage, right? Any other way of checking things out?

a loose tensioner could definitely do that. yeah i think you need to just re-do the belt install and make sure everything is lined up right.

A leak-down test would be a little more informative

Why do you think it's off a tooth, or that there's damage? If you're just going off the fact that the timing marks on the belt don't line up anymore -- they won't line up on every single revolution after you've set it... But you already knew that?

yes, when I set the crank to 0* ( the little orange tick) the Cam gear alignment dots are one tooth off. if I line up the cam gears, the crank is one tick off. yes, it is an interference motor, and I dont personally think any damage was done. just want to be sure. thanks for the responses!

just redo the belt and make sure you line the crank and cams to the marks on the block and head and line up the marks on the timing belt exaclty to the marks on the gears and make sure to put thread lock on the idler bolt and torque to 42ft/pnds if its rb25/rb26 and just make sure you adjusting your tensioner correctly as it says in the FSM. and your marks on your belt will not line up after 1 revolution but all your gears timing marks should line up every revolution. if you need a FSM go to http://www.racebread.com and go to files or links and find the fsm download and youll find the proper procedure to do your timing belt. let us know whats going on if this still doesnt fix it.

Also, make sure that when you are setting the tension on the belt that you are turning the engine in the right direction. I didn't have a problem with my rb20, but i have goofed on a honda before by turning the crank the wrong direction when checking the timing marks. Everything looked lined up. Put it together and started it. Bad news. Off a tooth. It ran like poooo!

When I redid it and actually followed the FSM, I realized what I'd done. I don't know for a fact that this will make a difference, but eh worth a shot.

OK, I looked again and the tbelt is so loose that you can move the crank up to 1 tick off and the cam gears dont move!!! No onder it is off!!! I'm gonna make sure everything is lined up, then re-adjust the tension. I think the spring is worn, so I'll just set it manually. some of the other boards say how to do this.

You should have continued this from your previous thread so there was continuity between your problem and solution.

Kamin - is there a way to add these posts to bmadd's previous thread?
