Hey guys,

I've got a question about the OEM Rear DVD Display. My car is a 06 M35 Sport but it doesn't have the tech pkg. so I don't currently have this option. But I did find the rear oem roof display, incl. remote and headphones for sale.

Is this option something that I can add and install myself? Do you know if there is a specific wiring harness or any other parts needed? Typically the DVD player is mounted in the center console for M's with the Tech pkg, but mines in the glovebox.

Has anyone attempted this? Is it worth considering? Kids are on the horizon so I thought that it'd be a cool feature to add to my M.

Feedback appreciated. :)

i dont think anyone here ever attempt to install the dvd screen mount on the roof/liner yet. installing the dvd player in the center console should be a breeze if all the wiring are there already. the one in your glove box is your nav player. that won't play normal dvd.

just out of curiosity, how much did you pay for the dvd player, screen and other accessories? where do you find them, on ebay or craigslist?

My opinion: NOT worth the trouble. The monitor is at such an awkward location that passengers will get sore necks & eyes from straining to view it. Also, the image quality is not as good as the front monitor. I'm still pissed that I paid thousands to order this option when new...

Imo get some pro's to install some in your seat headrests. The oem one blocks most of your view just fyi.

+1
if you do a little research and are handy with wiring, you could prolly do it yourself, plus you can switch it back to stock if you end up needing to sell your car down the line. The trouble is finding the headrests that match your interior color without the cost being too outrageous. I looked into it and was disappointed in the color matching of the leather, (and i have the black interior) for some of the cheaper models/brands, but i guess you get what you (don't-lol) pay for..

The player in the glovebox is tyipically NAV only, the one in the console is audio/video but only included with certain packages. Unless the one in your glovebox is custom and you don't have NAV, I don't think you'll be playing any DVDs from there regardless of the other advice.

Yep. The player is in the glovebox. I've actually considered relocating it under the seat or something to reclaim that wasted space.

Lol what are you planning on sticking in there that you can't do currently? :-)

Headrest tvs are they best and most logical upgrades you can do for rear entertainment. You can have them dyed to match your interior. I have an 06 I upgraded with headrests dyed. I'll upload pics when i get a chance.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Plantinum, how much did they run you? I like them a lot. If it's too expensive and I don't go that route, I will end up getting a portable dvd player and headphones and call it good. LOL :chuckle:

Those look like stand alone screen and dvd player. Do you have it hooked into the org player? Can you watch 1 movie on 3 screens?

I paid $200 for the headrest. A local auto upholstery shop charged me $45 a headrest to dye them to match. So the whole set up was less than $300. No reason to spend $1300.
