In 1956 Ford started offering one of the first "commercially viable" spin on oil filter for Ford, Mercury, Thunderbird, Lincoln, and Continental. Continental was a separate division in those days with an up-market product from Lincoln. The first "twist of a wrist" spin on filters were made for Ford by Wicks. The following year, other OEMs began following suit. I believe all 57 Fords had spin on filters. I remember the Chevy 283 engine (up to 67) used a cartridge filter named Purolator P-141. Each time I bought a Chevy with a 283, I would quickly install an adapter to use a spin on oil filter.
I have seen references where MotorCraft oil filters are purportedly made by Champion Brands today. Also, I've seen where the Mobil-1 filter is made by Champion Brands. I've seen a cut away of the Wal*Mart SuperTech oil filter and it also has a distinctive Champion Brand manufactured look about it. A while back I found a video where some guy was screaming obscenities into a you tube video as he cut open a variety of oil filters to find many were clearly from the same manufacturer - that being Champion Brands.
Fram made an early attemp to manufacturer a spin on filter for Crosley in the early 50s that failed. It is not considered in true lineage for today's spin on filters.
Meanwhile I have enough PurOne and Wix made oil filters stocked up to easily last 3 to 4 years for the Nissans and Hondas..
