Odometer stuck on 96 Maxima

My odometer has stopped working although the trip meter seems to still work. Once in a while it moves a little but I no longer know how many miles I'm racking up. My mechanic tells me they're hard to work on due to an anti-tampering design. He suggested replacing the entire instrument cluster (from a junk yard) instead but didn't get a call back from inquiries made. I suspect he just didn't want to work on it.

I'm hoping there's an easier fix or at least something I could try first. Anyone have experience with this? Thanx!

In english, it could be the cruise control is out. Look atpage 128. I guess check it with a multimeter. Appears to besome fuses under the hood to check too

Thanks for the quick reply, Nutria. I would never have thought to look at the cruise control. But the cruise seems to be working fine so is it still likely to be related? I'll have a look at the fuses but my odometer looks to be mechanical with the rotating digits. Loved the pdf manual. Will have to look at any others that may be available. I'm new.

These car manufacturers hate to even use the word odometerin any of their literature. I guess they are worried about mileage fraudfrom people who sell their old cars.

Yes I think the odometer could be a related casualty but I am notsure. I tried looking at some wiring diagrams in my Haynes manualbut didnt see the odometer as a separate unit with wires going toit.
