I was driving the other day when I hit a bad stretch of road plagued with pot holes and ruts. Good ol PA roads, anyways it caused the odometer to stop working. The speedo still works but the odometer don't. After a few more bumps it started to work again but then it just stoped all together. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

I have a 96 240sx and mine does the same. My spdometer works on and off but my odometer is off most of the time. I always get the engine light for the spd sensor.

A mechanic told me that there are gears on the spdsensor thats for the odometer and that gear might be going...

I ordered a new spd sensor for 133 from Nissan but it doesnt come with the gear $23... so hopefully it will be fixed after i replace my spd sensor

there are a couple things that can go wrong with the odo to make it stop working. As long as your speedo works all the time, and it is just the odo not working, I would check the following things. Most likely listed first

1.) Broken gearing (mentioned above), the plastic gearing breaks and the numbers won't count up, often this is caused by the worm gear on the servo motor, but can be others2.) servo motor failure, there is no mechanical connection to the odometer. there is an output signal from the speedo that drives a small servo motor at different speeds depending on the car speed. The motor can burn out or the electrical connector can come lose. (happened to me) 3.) The speedo unit could also get messed up and cause a bad signal to the servo but still registering speed.

I would say #1 is the likely result of heavy jarring like potholes. If you take the odo out, it is pretty straight forward, just remember how it was, maybe take some pictures. Looking at it does wonders for understand what can go wrong.
