Post

Hi Everyone,

Myself Mohan, I recently brought used car Nissan Altima GXE 2000 with approx 56K miles, clear car fax for worth 6300$. This is my first ever car. After running this car for couple weeks. I have notice following things

1) Service engine soon light on Dashboard: I did verify all the basic checks like fuel in car is more than 3 gallons in fact tank is full and fuel filler cap is properly closed. I did try to get code for this by pushing gas pedal procedure but i couldn't really succeed in getting the code.

Someone ask me to reset the code by removing battery connection for more than 20 mins before i do this step i would like to know is it right approach to reset the code. I just wanted to see once I reset the code service engine soon light will come up again? if yes then I'll take for repair.

2) Odometer ,speedometer tachometer basically all the indicators on Dashboard while car was in motion got stuck. Like blank display on Odometer and speedometer indicator was dropped to zero even car speed was at 40-45 mph etc. It gets started automatically after a while. This was happen couple of times. What could be reason for this unusual behavior of this dashboard indicators

Advance thanks for all your replies

Anytime I get a check engine light I go to Advance Auto Parts and get their code reader. They will let you use it for free then tell you what the code means. They won't have the parts(s) in stock, so just order them online, cheaper anyway.

I had a similar experience in my '01 maxima. Driving down the interstate and my cruise control unlatched. Then my speedo and tacho went crazy. Lights dimmed, radio cut in and out. I believe some of the dash indicators came on, but things were so nuts and can't recall exactly what they were. I took it to an Auto Zone and they tested the battery. They found that there was enough grime on top of the battery that it was conducting electricity across the top of it. They said if I cleaned it that it would probably be fine, but seeing as the battery was 5+ years old and I live in Wisconsin where you don't want to get caught without a lot of cranking amps when it is zero or less out, I just bought a new battery. I have never experienced the problem since.

Hope this helps, gives you some things to check that don't cost you a dime. Good luck!

I would definitely take the car to whatever your favorite auto parts store is and have them scan for codes (should be free) and let us know what you find.

And welcome to NICO.
