Anytime I get a check engine light I go to Advance Auto Parts and get their code reader. They will let you use it for free then tell you what the code means. They won't have the parts(s) in stock, so just order them online, cheaper anyway.
I had a similar experience in my '01 maxima. Driving down the interstate and my cruise control unlatched. Then my speedo and tacho went crazy. Lights dimmed, radio cut in and out. I believe some of the dash indicators came on, but things were so nuts and can't recall exactly what they were. I took it to an Auto Zone and they tested the battery. They found that there was enough grime on top of the battery that it was conducting electricity across the top of it. They said if I cleaned it that it would probably be fine, but seeing as the battery was 5+ years old and I live in Wisconsin where you don't want to get caught without a lot of cranking amps when it is zero or less out, I just bought a new battery. I have never experienced the problem since.
Hope this helps, gives you some things to check that don't cost you a dime. Good luck!
