I bought the Rogue six weeks ago. It had 301 miles on it, because our dealer had located the configuration we wanted roughly that far away. I have the required mileage certificate to back that up.
Yesterday I checked the mileage to answer a survey, and it read 283. The trip odometers, which I had zeroed out when I got the car and was setting it up, read 277. So the odometer should have read about 578. The "miles remaining until empty" read 89.
I called the dealer, and of course had to bring it in to prove I wasn't just reading the wrong indicator. The trip there added the proper miles to the reading.
They were stumped. Simply said to monitor it for a while.
Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas?

:wtf2:

Does it have OEM wheels or have they been replaced by larger ones? Just a guess.

Are you certain you've got your numbers straight?
1) I bought the Rogue six weeks ago. It had 301 miles on it...
2) Yesterday I checked the mileage to answer a survey, and it read 283...

By law, the paperwork is supposed to have the exact mileage at delivery. Did you check to verify it had 301 miles when you drove it off the lot? Unless they wrote the wrong numbers on the paperwork and you failed to notice it, I find it hard to believe the odometer is going backwards.

Stock wheels.
State of Florida Odometer Disclosure Statement and Sales Contract both show mileage of 301, signed by the dealer and me. Odo showed it when I test drove it.
Bottom line: The car had 301 miles when I bought it, and six weeks, 277 miles later, the odo showed 283. The dealer's service dept can't explain it; they say to continue monitoring it.
Modern electronics are wondrous things, but nothing we invent is perfect or infallible.
If it continues to act up, I'll insist on a new unit and lots of certification to forestall future legal complications.

Well, color me surprised. I didn't think it was possible, but I was wrong. After doing some research, I think I've found some info you may find helpful.
Mine would lose miles as I drove, usually when I hit the brake or turn signal. The ECM would reset and I would lose miles. There was an intermittent loss of power to the ECM or wherever the odometer reading is stored and it would revert back to a saved reading I guess. The ECM would reset and I would lose miles. There was an intermittent loss of power to the ECM or wherever the odometer reading is stored and it would revert back to a saved reading I guess. The problem on mine turned out to be a loose connection on the large cable that feeds the fuse block.
This happened to my 06 Vectra as I was checking my trip meter with switch on the dash. The odometer reading, which was at approx. 55,248, suddenly went to something like 1,193,201, and when I hit the switch again, it went to 0. Freightliner told me how to read the odometer on the Freightliner display. I went to the Good Sam Rally in Phoenix ( spring of 2012) a couple of months later, and talked to the Freightliner rep who told if the MMDC-A,XC was replaced, the dash reading would pick up the engine computer output and the correct mileage would be displayed on the dash, as the MMDC unit was a "read through" device. When I returned home in Aug., I had Freightliner in Mt Vernon, WA replace the MMDC unit to the tune of $650. When I picked up my MH, much to my dismay the odometer read the same as before. I was told that due to Fed. Regulations, they could not " reset" the odometer. I felt that the true odometer in the engine reading was not being reset, only displayed properly. Several calls to Freightliner only confirmed that it was a lost cause trying to get the proper reading to show up. The " fix" for this is a sticker on the dash with the original mileage that you add to the current dash readout to give you current total mileage. This is apparently a somewhat common problem in 05 and 06 Freightliner chassis. Unfortunately this doesn't help much, but you are not alone with this problem.

Rogue One, thanks for the research! What was the vehicle in the first quote?

A 2001 Kenworth T2000. Doing a quick search didn't immediately turn up any cars exhibiting this problem, just big rigs and RV's.

Thanks again for checking it out. Now we have some hints about what might be going on.
