I own a 2003 R50 with the Bose audio system, and it's been acting odd lately. I have a PDF copy of the Nissan service manual, 2002 edition, and the most I can deduce is that it's a bad audio unit. The issue first started when presets were randomly loss without a battery disconnect, manual points towards 15A fuse or the audio unit, 15A fuse is fine. Then the unit was inoperable, illumination still worked so it wasn't the harness plug, manual points towards the 10A fuse, a bad chassis ground, or the audio unit, 10A fuse is fine and I do not suspect it's a grounding issue. This is where things start becoming a bit odd, I pulled the 15A fuse and put it back in, unit resets itself, works fine, for a bit. One of the next times I touch the vehicle, the audio unit operated fine for a few minutes, while messing around with channel presets it decides to lock itself up and become inoperable, buttons and knob didn't work, the display was still displaying the last thing that was actively changed before the lock up, with a hum coming from the tweeters, possibly speakers as well but it wouldn't have been audible, I shut the vehicle off and pull the key, audio unit did not shut off until the 15A fuse, which supplies power via the battery and not the ignition switch, was pulled. Plugged the fuse back in, audio unit reset itself, things were fine for a few minutes, then it locked itself back up again, display was still on but this time with no tweeter hum, and required the fuse to be pulled yet again, and I haven't messed with it since. I don't suspect a chassis ground issue, as a break from ground would break the circuit, especially as there's no ground within the harnesses and only via mounting screws to the chassis, leaving the unit inoperable in a deactivated state, not in the inoperable active state. I originally, when the unit was dead during the second issue, suspected it just blew a capacitor, as all old electronics do, as the R50 is going on 20 years old now, but with it's latest issues I'm questioning if it's a bad capacitor at all, but I don't have the hardware troubleshooting experience to begin questioning what would cause this specific issue, other than maybe a chip is going bad. Before I go and pull the unit to see what I can find, does anyone have any suggestions of what I should be looking for, or ideas of what component has actually gone bad? I'm trying my best to avoid replacing the unit, OEM units are overpriced, and I've heard nothing but bad things about interfacing anything aftermarket with the Bose system, which would also mean running new wires to bypass the OEM system, and probably new speakers as well, which I currently do not want to get into doing at the moment. I do also want to know what actually went bad, it's a learning experience, and I wouldn't be surprised if this is bound to happen to more units over time, yet I haven't seen this specific issue documented before. I know electric engineering isn't the forte of many vehicle forum users, but I have some hopes that someone here might be able to point me in the right direction, as I figured a forum relative to my vehicle would be the best place to start. Thank you to anyone who gives any insight to what this issue might be.

It sounds like the unit's internal voltage regulation is going south. The processors are either browning out or going overvoltage, causing the firmware to branch into the weeds.

The old OEM Clarion head unit on my '02 flaked out electrically in a similar way 7yrs ago. I too have the Bose amplifier and speaker system. The Bose system and your steering wheel controls can easily be retained, function reliably and normal if you replace your head unit and add the right adapters. Crutchfield.com is a great place to start looking at all the stereo systems that will fit and function well in your '03. Just type in the year, make, model and answer the question that pops up about having the Bose system. All of the head units that pop up as a match will also include a link for all the installation gear you will need to make this work flawlessly. It's not exactly plug and play but it's the next best thing. Installation instructions for all of this is also included.
