odd sohc hud gauge cluster prob

so when i bought my car it didnt have a dimmer switch in it and i was told the gauge lights wouldnt work unless i did. so i bought one and hooked it up and just like before my tach works and my coolant gauge works and all the indicator lights like ebrake oil and fuel light comes on (i dont think the fuel gauge works any way just the light weird huh) but still no gauge lights and my speedo has never worked anyone have input??? i think the speedo is that capacitor that is notorious for going bad and anyone know what nissan would charge to fix it?
