I had the same thing happen, turns out my exhause had a rust hole in it that allowed exhaust to come into the car...

my brothers RX7 had that problem, and being an rx7 made it even worse (apex seals were starting to go = car was a lil smokey)

He developed migranes and still has them even after selling the car.

The gear oil smell, check to make sure you've not overfilled the gear oil and some of it's creeping up into the cabin from the hole for the shifter.

I just bought my 240 last weekend, and it started smelling like gear oil on the way home. If you figure out exactly what it is, let me know. I suspect the transmission, but I just replaced the smelly gear oil with synchromesh, non-smelly oil. I think there was enough old oil to continue smelling.

just had trani rebuilt a month ago...another story...lol i am running synthetics in the trani now and still same smell. i didn't mention it to the trani shop at the time slipped my mind. ...my exhaust is being replaced under warranty next week wish it was brm ..sweet system there WOW but its not leaking just rattling in there somewhere thats why replacement. but that smell is strong, and is in my opinion a grease/diff oil smell ...yup out of the shifter is where I'm thinkin.... is there a vent for the trani around ther ?

After having a very crappy night working on the 240, I'm pretty sure the smell is coming from my broken shifter boot. The boot on my transmission is broken and there is oil all over in there. If your checking yours, its the second boot you come too, after the one thats bolted on. Next time I tighten my fill/drain plugs, they are getting finger tightened. I went to drain my fluid after only changing it last weekend, and the plug stripped out on me. Then I went to add more, and the fill plug stripped out, with my 17mm wrench. I guess I'm going to have to get the square drive socket for it. I would really like to know why these things get so tight. I don't have to use nearly as much force on my s10 with nv3500 transmission. If those plugs fit I would like to use them instead of the ones in the 240, but if they get just as tight it probably wouldnt help that they are allen keys.

IF you recently changed your fluid, you might have filled it up to much and its probably dripping from your shifter (happened to me and no it wont get into ur cabin, but your trany gets hot and smell just gets worse). If you didn't fill it up anytime recently then one of the seals around your shifter are probably damaged and the smell/fluid is leaking through. To check this take off the shifter boot--then take off the rubber boot --- then I believe theres 4 bolts on a metal ring--- by then you should visually be able to see whether its leaking or not----if so buy a new rubber seal (or better reaplace the shifter with something better) and replace it.

Oh yah and diff/trany smell like rotten eggs.
