whats happening, been a while since I've been on here.
the q is still going strong just hit 167k miles.
lately I've been driving her a lot and noticed her shifting.

light acceleration the 2nd to 3rd shifts are odd.
while shifting the engine and rpms will go down a little then go up.
it's as if it shifts and apply the torque converter then unlocks the torque converter.

but medium to hard acceleration she doesn't do that at all.

also I've never changed the diff. fluid since i had her and i would like to do that.
so when getting the new gear fluid it has to say lsd on it right? and what would be the appropriate weight.

and another thing I'm thinking about letting my 97 maxima go and owning the q full time.
what do you peeps think?

thanks in advance

The torque converter will unlock if you let off of the pedal. I think what you're describing is normal...

Any good GL-5 75w-90 should be fine. I use Mobil 1. Remember to remove the fill plug before pulling the drain plug on the differential - you don't want to drain it and then find that the top plug is seized!

How long has it been since the transmission fluid was last changed?

If it has been recently was changed, do you know the type that was used?

I used a top shelf synthetic gear oil in the differential when I changed it a while back.

Thanks for the replies
within the 2 or 3 years
we've had her. none.
but glad that you brought that up.
it has an external filter...so when i go to change the trans fluid, i was thinking about removing the one that's inside the trans?? as for the external 1 do any one know where i can purchase one or equivalent of that??

q451990 thanks for the tip.
so i remove the top one first then the drain one.

He could also be describing the typical slow 2-3 shift these trans get after they start getting old.. Thats what it sounds like to me, the TC will not lock under any circumstance if you're below 40MPH

I agree with the gear oil too. Its been a couple years since i changed mine, I probably ought to do that. But I agree with Heath, dont forget to take the fill (top) plug out first. Since the bottom plug is covered in oil, it usually comes out. Ive never had an issue getting the plugs out, but its a lot easier to make sure it comes loose before taking the bottom one out, its not too easy to turn the car upside down!! :)

Also, you can get a hand pump to put the oil in the diff, DEFINITEY worth it. They sell them at the autoparts stores, and it makes putting the oil in the diff a million times easier. I would keep the oil inside rather than in the garage, that thick stuff gets really thick when its cold! :)

noted. thanks.
there was 1 week when the t/c locked around 30mph or more.
but where can i get that round filter, that's by the radiator.

also would it be fine to leave out the filter that's inside the transmission?
