on the drivers side right in front of the inner fender is a black box that connects to the snorkel that goes to the stock airbox, what is the point of this part? Does it even have a name?

That would be your intake resonator. It's like a muffler for your intake. Some ppl say that you get a bit more power if you take it out but when I took mine out all it did was make my engine super loud. Took a while to get used to but I kinda like it now.

don't mess with it unless you have a reason to

if you are going to remove it mind as well get an intake to go with it

I have to disagree. I did my own DIY cold air induction, pulls as much as an intake.

well I did take off that snorkel thing once and it didnt seem to do anything, but I wasnt driving the car, it was only idling.

I was just wondering what it was anyway, thanks for the help!

butt dyno? :D

just my humble opnion but it may sound louder but wether there is enough whp gained is another story. I don't have intake, exhaust or headers on my s13 because I feel that the gain woudl be minimal... I want to hang with the big boygs with FI! :D

well i made a custom intake thingy too. its definitely louder, but it didnt seem to pull WAY harder. just a bit harder. rev's come up quicker. but its nothing to say "I JUST SHAT MY PANTS" over.

One thing a real intake system has is that it's 3" mandrel bent piping all the way to the engine, versus whatever the stock is.

well...mine is a "real intake system". I have a 3" hose going to the box.The box directly gets cold air from the outside even more with the DIY duct. You'll feel a pull.

Ah..I assume you have the duct in your wheel well, creating a ram-air effect. I've always wondered what happens if it rains or you go through a high pressure car was, does water get sucked into your intake or does the filter keep it out?

well, a drop here and there isnt gonna hurt anything, even if it does get through the filter. But most DIY "ram air" effect intakes just redirect the air to the filter inside the engine compartment. If you have the filter in your bumper, thats when things could get ugly. Most folks i know who have the real aftermarket tubing with conical (or whatever) filter in their bumper do not put it through a automated wash. They go to a do it yourself place with pressure wands so you can clean it with the car off.

Try revving the engine, it's a noticable difference.
