Anyone else see a different oil level dipstick readings depending on which way the dipstick is inserted? It will show a difference of as much as 1/3 the crosshatched area. I don't see how it could happen but it definitely shows a different level depending on which way the dipstick is inserted. Which also makes me wonder do I go by the lower reading or the higher reading?

Also, how long do you folks wait to get an accurate oil level reading? The 10 minutes the owner's manual says to wait is way to short. If I wait several hours then it might show full but if I only wait 10 minutes then it may show needing oil. I guess these engines just take a looooong time for the oil to trickle down?

I'd go with the ten minute mark. If the oil level is a little high when starting, that will cause no trouble or damage and the oil level will be correct when the engine is running. When you rev high, the sump will be even lower as more oil will be sloshing around in the heads.

Interesting about the dipstick though. I have no idea about that.

I seem to remember reading 15 minutes for my '03, also in the FSM for the oil change procedure. I generally wait 1/2 an hour. I have noticed a difference the front and back of the dipstick, but not as much as 1/3, I think because it's going in at an angle. I go with the one that gives me the clearer reading.

I was once taught to check at least twice as the suction on the seal of the stick is enough to give two readings. He would always pull and dip three times, but worked with heavy duty machinery.

My pathfinder gives different readings constantly. I can check cold and be full, Drive twenty minutes and check four hours later to a Lower reading. Drive home and the next day be full.

This being said my truck use oil, so I check my stick daily. Only owned for two oil changes now however on my last oil change I have not used a drop in 600km. A nice surprise. Looking forward to see if it lasts now that I have maintained it myself.
