My son has a '99 I30 with the odometer showing 255977. Here is what happens. Get in the car the odometer shows 255977. Drive around and the odometer adds mileage appropriately. Park the car and get back in and its back to 255977. I have seen it roll over 256000 several times. Everything else works...speedometer and both trip meters.

Any ideas on how to correct or troubleshoot this problem?

Welcome to NICO.

The problem is internal to the cluster. Check out the FSM starting on page EL-73 for diagnostics. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Maxima/1999/EL.pdf

The fix for this is most likely the need for a new cluster. If this is the case look on ebay, and then you will have to take it to Nissan/infiniti dealership and have them adjust the mileage on there to match yours. There may be some paperwork needed for this too.

Agree...new/used cluster required. My 97 I30 has a fluctuating RPM which stabilizes after a few minutes of driving. Everything else is normal. Checked/cleaned all related sensors and cables but problem remained. I used ECU Talk and and verified RPM signal to ECU is normal, even if the tachometer is fluctuating wildy. So just like you, I need a new cluster. It may be expensive though and it's not a high priority for me right now.
