I have a 2003 G35 Sedan. The main noise I'm concerned about is a grinding sound. After the car has been parked for a while (shut off) and I start it and go down the road as soon as it goes to shift from 1st to 2nd I hear a slight "thhrrrr" before it changes. After that first grind it doesnt do it again until the car has been parked for a while. Any clue as to what this may be? I hope it's not my transmission, I just dont understand why it only does it the one time after you first get in it.

The other noise is a creeking coming from the suspension, pretty much in all 4 corners any time the car flexes. Any suggestions on how to take care of that?

Thanks in advance!

if the "thhrrr" sounds like its coming from the front, its the ABS going through its self-check...that's normal, it happens every time you start the car and go forward.

Yeah it does sound like it's coming from the front, and does it every time after it has been shut off for an hour or so, and only right before it changes into 2nd gear.

I would agree with smockers, it's the ABS doing a check.

As for the squeaks from the suspension, is it when your turning, going over bumps, or stopping? You might just need to get your chassis lubed or wheel bearings and shocks/springs checked if you have high mileage.

It mainly does it when im going over bumps where the suspension flexes. Seems to be in all 4 corners. I've read about compression rod's going out and found a TSB on it, so I will check that out too. My car has 60k miles on it.

Yeah I saw a TSB on those and it said to check the tire pressures then meausre the height of the fender on each side and if one side's lower that the rod was bad. I did this and mine are pretty much the same height. Any other way to inspect them? Do you agree with the others about the ABS being the other noise? Thanks!

i asked the dealership tech manager about this (and many other questions). he said that if you leave it parked for a little while or the computer just says it's time (shortly after starting the engine and driving) the G will do an antilock break check. in my car it usually happens within 30 seconds of driving (probably over a low MPH).

And for further peace of mind that it is the ABS self-check, it is described in the owners manual. The salesman at the dealership I purchased mine at explained this whole thing to me for this very reason, so that I wouldn't be worried about it and running to the dealer for no reason...which I think every dealership should do because this is one concern people always ask about every now and then.

With regards to the ABS noise, mine seems to happen, as described, after you just start the car and when i first touch the brakes. Sound right? It doesnt happen all the time, but its definately something to do with the brakes and it only ever happens once.

Just listen to your car. If the noise happens after driving for a bit, going over speed bumps, then it's probably a suspension issue. Unless you get a dummy light after a min or two driving, then it's probably the ABS self-check.

It won't happen every single time you start the car (ie a quick stop), at least I don't think, maybe I've just gotten so used to it I don't notice it all the time. But here's the deal, you start the car, lets say you need to back up to get out of a spot, put it in drive or 1st, it will make this noise right before you go into 2nd (AT) or at a low speed say around 5-7 MPH (you may reach higher if you're accelerating quickly). It can happen while you touch the brakes, but for me it usually happens before I have to do that.

Agreed 100%....Good that we all have the same issue...and have extremely similar circumstantial evidence!

It's not any kind of issue, its just what the car does.

You will also notice it more in cold ambient temperatures - and probably more on an incline.

Yeah my car did that and I noticed for a while and got alittle worried but did some reasearch and came up with the same results you did. So no worry.
