hey guys,

I have had this odd noise going on for a long time. It sounds like two pieces of metal rubbing or something. I thought it was the front drive shaft from like under the motor rubbing against something because my former, s*** mechanic cut a piece of the surrounding metal around where it connects because thats where he thought the source of the noise was.... i lubricate every joint on the drive shaft and i cant tell really if it helps or not... Have any of you guys experienced something similar? I dont want to go to the dealer because, well, that place is a pain! Could it be something on the driveshaft? or in the steering column? or serpentine pulleys? basically the way it goes down is once im over 10 mph the noise starts.. it sounds like two pieces of metal rubbing, and is more pronounced after it rains... just wondering if any of you could give me possibilities or solutions to try and make the noise go away. it sucks because it could be like anything-- or something weird... :(

if you say metal to metal, its probably the heat-sheild loose and banging onto your exhaust pipe, usually this happens right after the front cat, for example mine was like 6 inches away from the drivers side cat, and it rusted thru the heatshield were it was connected, and the part it was hanging onto was flimsy too so i took 2 metal pipe clamps i think their called and clamped it down, no noise.

you said it starts after 10mph tho, so its probably not that, but worth to check,

also it could be the sway links but i dont know what kind of noise those make.

Does anyone think this could be the drum brakes??? needing replacement and somehow rubbing???

If it is this i would be so relieved because it is extremely annoying...

Anyone have experience with rubbing noise coming from the drum brakes????

when do these need to be changed out??

My guesses
If drum brakes worn you would hear them at all times when braking.
Metal rubbing could be:
Seals at transmission
Front brakes binding
Seals in pumpkins
CV boots ripping
Bad tire
Worn CV joint
Dragging E brake

It's hard to troubleshoot from my nice warm office especially noises, but give these things a look see.

It could be a stuck caliper piston or a warning sign that your pads are low. I had a metal on metal sound almost like a high pitched grinding sound while NOT braking which was my brake pads.

well i just replaced the pads and rotors not that long ago... so i dont think it could be that... and it sounds like its coming from the back when you drive like 20mph with the window down...

i guess i should just take it to the dealer to have them figure it out? :frown:

With rear noises, are your brake shoes adjusted up, loose fitting shoes to the drum can be noisy try gently pulling on the e brake when you hear the noise at lower speeds. Shoes often stick near drums make a slight noise warm up and come away until the next time you brake. The rear brakes should be cleaned, lubed, and deglazed every three months. When the e brake is pulled one shoe will engage the drum to slow you down, if still noisy try the foot pedal to bring both shoes in, use low speeds when the noise happens. If it corrects the noise, your rear brakes need cleaning, adjusting, lubrication and de-glazing of the brake material. Rear brakes last a long long time but require regular maintenance.
