I just looked at the Nissan Stats for the 09 Versa and Sentra.

Well, guess what..the Sentra, has a bigger 2 ltr. 140 hp engine and weighs more than 200 lbs more than the Versa, gets better MPG's on the highway.

What am I missing here?

Versa maybe taller - have more drag?

I take your point though, my 03 Sentra was marginally better on gas.

You forgot to think about the transmission and gearing.

feloniousmonk is on the right path, combine that with more torque and a slightly lower crusing RPM and possibily better gas mileage.

I have been saying for the past 2 years that the Versa should have the 2 ltr Sentra engine for better mpg's, not the dumbed down 1.6 ltr they are now putting in the new Versa El Cheapo.

As the Sentra, bigger, wider and weighing over 200 lbs more than the Versa gets better mpg's with a bigger engine, Nissan has seriouly missed the mark with the Versa powertrain.

My old Buick Park Ave, ticks along at 1600 rpm at freeway speeds and gets better mpgs than my Versa, screaming like a run away mixmaster trying to keep up with traffic on the hills.

The 2.0 sentra uses the same trans and gearing as the 1.8 versa.

not surprising. My 6 cylinder BMW gets around 30 mpg on the highway and is much heavier. The bigger engines are more efficient at highway speeds. The Versa seems to strain much more at 70 with higher rpm's. Probably the same situation for the bigger Sentra engine. With city driving, the Versa wins hands down.

"In city driving the Versa wins hands down"

Even that point is debatable....one guy who posted on this forum last year was using his Versa to deliver flyers to apartments in New York....now that's 'city driving'...he was getting 11 mpg.

I think your BMW would probably do better. and I doubt that the Sentra would do any worse.

the better the engine to weight ratio, the less the engine has to work and the less fuel needed.

A corvette can achieve 30 mpg highway and think of that engine in those things... city blows though.

Before buying my Versa I was driving a 3500lbs 1997 Odls Cutlass Supreme with 245 000km, never changed the air filter, fuel filter, plugs etc...

Was getting better gas mileage with the Cutlass and it had a big 3.4l engine and lots of powa'.

LOL @ my silly Versa. Anyway I will be going to see a Honda or Toyota salesman beginning of next month.

I was hoping this little car could get AT LEAST 25 mpg on open road.

LOL again. The CVT trans in the Versa has to be my biggest deception in ALL the cars I've owned. Beaters included.

when i my rpm goes high over 3-4000 rpm..i know that the car will consume gas quickly during city driving..on the highway i like the cars gas consumption but city driving she consumes..like any car

I am constantly astounded at some of these mileage number posted. I am just like you - city/hwy. I can break 40MPG anytime I want on the highway if I keep my V under 55MPH (I've done it 4 times already). As a matter of fact, I just got back from a 200 mile trip (all highway) and I kept my V between 65 and 70 and still managed to squeeze out 36MPG. The only thing I can think of (my mileage) is I never "hot dog" it, I always take off slowly, don't floor the engine, etc. Also, my V doesn't have the CVT.

I would have to get out and stand in front of my car to kill myself if I drove UNDER 55 on the highway. I won't even go THAT slow on city streets unless traffic is heavy or speed limit is 40MPH or less. I'm fine with a combined average of 32.7 mpg

Please let us know if you do get a Honda or Toyota. Any sarcasm aside I would like to know (from your experience) how you feel they compare.Respectfuly, morgan

Hey, I didn't say I do it all the time!

I guess what frustrates the heck out of me are all these members complaining about their mileage. I have a feeling they honestly believe that the Government bases their estimated mileage on someone driving 80+ MPH. Just unbelievable!
