ODB1 scanner... anyone know how to mess with engine codes?

i have an 89 240 i need to find someone in so cal that has an engine scanner or someone told me s-13's have lights on the ecu that you can read the sequence somehow and look up the code online....anyone help man i really need to fix this. if you happen to be able to let me barrow or if you can scan it real quick thad be badass but please help im near LA
