Anyone purchase any of the handheld types that can recommend one or another? I dont want to spend a whole lot but I also dont want to spend $200 on one of the cheaper ones if it is crap!

Any scan tool for 200 isn't going to be good. The only exception will be the kits to adapt a palm pilot or laptop to use as a scan tool. For $200 you probably won't be able to do anything except for scan for the codes. It won't even tell you what they are. You could probably get a decent one for around $600. The really good ones will cost $5000 to $12000.

yea, i'm planning on buying the cheapo scan tools since my family are buying newer cars that require me to use obdII scanners to access the codes.

after u pull the codes w/ el cheapo tool, goto http://www.batauto.com for a list of trouble codes.:ylsuper

Personally I bought a Snap on scanner from one of my friends that is a mechanic.
