Ok, my car did not come with an Owners' Manual. I want to know what the recommended Octane for teh 95 SE's are. this thread better not debate what octane is better! haha cause it's a never ending argument...

"Use unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (research octane number 96).If unleaded premium gasoline is not available, unleaded regular gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI (research octane number 91) can be used. However, for maximum vehicle performance, the use of unleaded premium gasoline is recommended."

the 240's run best with the cheap stuff at no more than $5 at a time. :) unless your engine code ends with T.

your joking right? also, never let your car run below 1/4 of tank. i have had bad experiences in my 300zx below 1/4.

Maybe I should have been more explicit. My first post was quoted directly from the '95 240SX FSM.

Well Id like to use 91 but I have bills and rent to pay so I only use 89, also I have never had a problem running below a 1/4 tank.

me also. never had problem running 87 octan below quarter tank.

if there is something wrong with your car with or less than a quarter tank of gas, maybe something is wrong with the pressurization. Gas pump? Filter? Injectors? stuff like that

I ran 93 in it every tank. My parents hated me, b/c I'd ***** at them everytime they'd put anything else in it (hey, if they were gonna use my car, they were gonna pay to put gas in it, dammit). But then again, my timing was advanced to the point where it would knock if I didn't run 93...

The fuel in your tank is what the pump uses to lube the motor in the pump. For it to be lube it has to be completely submerged in gas, so when your running it at 1/4 tank or under it's not submerged in gas, causing the motor to run dry.

If it were running dry...you would not be getting any fuel and the car would soon stop running...and the fuel pump would shut off. Now perhaps running only partly submerged could increase wear, don't know, haven't looked at the geometry that closely or played with the pump. If it is pumping any fluid it should be lubricating itself unless it is poorly designed. I've always run my new vehicles from full to near empty before refilling and have yet to see that cause a problem, but I've only got about 120 K miles on each of them now.

True. The pickup hose is below the pump. Lubrication is not the issue, but temperature is. Long term, a cooler pump (or any electrical motor) will most often last longer than a hotter one. Keeping the pump submerged in gas will keep it cooler.

Yah but doesn't it stay cooler though lubrication?

Cooler than without lubrication? Yes. Cooler than when submerged in gas? No. You can cool it from the inside only or from the inside and the outside. The pump generates a certain amount of heat. Varying the amount of cooling will ultimately vary the final, steady state temp of the component.

I was beating the h3LL out of my stock KA motor with octane 87 for years, no problem.

when you are turbocharging your motor, you should always use highest octane your gas station offers (93)
