HAs anyone tried this ? This is a copy from a Z car site

Please note that I would NOT suggest that a person use the following fuel mixtures without considering the detrimental effects on their engine, vital engine components(O2 sensor, etc.) and other potential damage. Additionally, the costings may be off since I neglected to check the date of the article. That all said, the information is interesting nonetheless.

Fuel Formulas=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-Original publication is:GS-Xtra1213 Gornto RoadValdosta, GA 31602(912) 244-0577

Editor: Richard Lasetter, president Gran Sport Club of America (GSCA)The title of the original was something like "Homebrew Octane Boosters"... I

Formula #1 - Toulene====================R+M/2.........114Cost...........$2.50/gal

Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium-------------------------------10%...........94.2 Octane20%...........96.4 Octane30%...........98.6 Octane

Notes: Common ingredient in Octane Boosters in a can. 12-16 ounces will onlyraise octane 2-3 *points*, i.e. from 92 to 92.3. Often costs $3-5 for 12-16ounces, when it can be purchased for less than $3/gal at chemical supply housesor paint stores.

Formula #2 - Xylene===================R+M/2.........117Cost...........$2.75/gal

Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium-------------------------------10%...........94.5 Octane20%...........97.0 Octane30%...........99.5 Octane

Notes: Similar to Toulene. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*,i.e. from 92 to 92.3. Usually mixed with Toulene and advertised as *raceformula*.

Formula #3 - Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (MTBE)===============================================R+M/2.........118Cost...........$3.50/gal

Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium-------------------------------10%...........94.6 Octane20%...........97.2 Octane30%...........99.8 Octane

Notes: Oxygenate. Very common in octane booster products. Has lower BTU content than toulene or xylene, but oxygenate effect makes the gasoline burn better and produce more energy.

Formula #4 - Methanol or Ethanol================================R+M/2.........101Cost...........$0.60 - $1.75/gal

Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium-------------------------------10%...........94.3 Octane (Methanol)10%...........94.7 Octane (Ethanol)20%...........Not Recommended

Notes: Methanol is wood alcohol. Ethanol is grain alcohol and found in Gasohol in 10% ratios. Both alcohols are mildly corrosive and will eat gas tank linings, rubber and aluminum if used in excessive ratios. Main ingredient in"Gas Dryers", combine with water.

Formula #5 - Isopropyl Alcohol and Tertiary Butyl Alcohol=========================================================R+M/2.........101Cost...........$0.60-$1.50/gal

Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium-------------------------------10%...........94.5 Octane20%...........Not Recommended30%...........Not Recommended

Notes: Similar to Methanol/Ethanol. Isopropyl Alcohol is simply rubbing alcohol.

How to make your own octane booster (this is the basic formula of one of the popular octane booster products).

To make eight 16 ounce bottles (128 oz = 1 gal):================================================100 oz of toulene for octane boost25 oz of mineral spirits (cleaning agent)3 oz of transmission fluid (lubricating agent)

This product is advertised as "octane booster with cleaning agent *and* lubricating agent!". Diesel fuel or kerosene can be substituted for mineral spirits and light turbine oil can be substituted for transmission fluid. Color can be added with petroleum dyes.

Scary, I didn't do too well in high school math.

Also, seems to be an awful lot of warnings. I think I would just do a few more modifications to my car and get the added performance without some of those risks.

More power to you though (literally) if you can make that work for you. gl.

good post goixiz . alot of people get the octane thing backwards though. The higher the octane the slower it burns . Thus when you put 87 octane into any performance/Forced inducted car it causes ping.

Are you lab Rat? That is some good info but I have a recipe form a friend that used it in a nasty little GTIR

in a five gallon gas can put four and a half gallons of Hi octane gas (in Japan about 100)Put in one and a half boxes mouth ballsfill the rest with paint thinnerSit the jug in the corner for a week shaking it from time to time

After a week using a paint strainer pour the contents into another container and its race time!

DO NOT try this at home!!! I will not be held responsible for you lousing your eye brows or any other part or you body or your friends, also to include but not limited to blowing up you engine, your moms car, the cat, the dog or any siblings.

I used Toluene a couple times...

I started with a litre to a tank and then a little more and then I tried a half gallon and moved on to about 3/4 gallon

I don't know if it is related but my car runs rich when it is cold (I leave a black cloud at the first couple red lights in the morning) and takes a few extra cranks to start (which makes sense considering I read somewhere that Toluene doesn't burn as well when it is cold) but I got awsome milage!
