I read in the factory service manual that Nissan suggests 97 octane gasoline for the S14 SR20DET. I live in Southern California, where gas sucks and they've already added things like MTBE to get us up to a whoppin, 91 octane (for about $2.30+ a gallon, last I checked). Are there any off the shelf octane boosters that I can use, to significantly up the octane level?

If there aren't, I might have to seriously keep the S13 as the night time / weekend warrior vehicle.

Run and run fast do not mix that crap in your fuel. unless you like to hurt your car. just find a car that runs on pump gas or buy race gas.

I think the 97 octane that is referred to in the manual is using another method for calculating octane, the one that they use overseas, not the (R+M)/2 method like we use....don't they use just R or something?!? I dunno much about octane ratings.

Maybe this will help. Alcohol raises the octane by 5% or so and it cools the intake air temp.

Has anyone on this board actually tried the Toluene mix? Does it work? As for alcohol, it would be better just use a alcohol injection kit (and as Madscientist mentioned in another thread, use Mystery oil), so it will not eat away the gas tank.

Sorry I'm late, just found this thread. I used 3 gallons toulene mixed into my 20 gallon tank. Placebo effect maybe, but I thought I felt a difference. Shoulda been 95 octane mixed together, so there should be a difference I think. The cheapest I found toulene for is about $7/gallon, not as cheap as what's been stated online, but cheaper than the octane booster crap sold at Pep Boys.

Higher octain won't help unless you are loosing timing becuase of detonation. Then increasing the octain will bump your timing back up and give you more power... But if you can run 87 and get no nock then 91 won't help unless you turn up the boost.

on toluene A firned with a GN was getting 6 degrees of retard in drive on 93 octain. He added the recomended amount of toluene and the timing went back to full advance
