OBX short shifter isnt working!!!

Hey, I was wondering if anyone out there has tried to install an OBX short shifter on their 240sx. I got one, but it didn't come with any installation instructions, so I basically just took out the old shifter from inside the cabin, and then tried to put the new one in the same way that I had the old one, but it doesn't fit right. The part of the shifter from where it goes into the transmission to the bulb is significantly longer than the stock one, and when I bolt everything down it grinds and won't really shift. Do I have to change something inside the transmission?
