I've been reading everything I can on ecu tuning but I still have some questions...

Is anyone here running the emance (or equivalent ie JWT or Enthalpy) ecu tune in a state with emissions testing? All I can find are ecu tunes for OBDI ecu's, but from everything I've read, if you swap an OBDI ecu into a vehicle that was OBDII from the factory, you wont pass emissions (just the readiness test by cable hookup... no sniffer)

the real question I have is when I contacted Jason at Emance/Eformance he tells me that most guys just keep their OBDII ecu and just swap it out for their tuned ECU when emissions testing time comes around. Yeah it's easy to just plug up a new ECU, but if I am running a z32 maf and 550cc injectors (not to mention the huge turbo sitting on top of the exhaust manifold) wouldnt it be catastrophic to just swap out the tuned ECU with the stock one?

Everyone talks great about this guy, but is this really trustworthy advice? I can't see how the car would crank or even run for that matter with a stock ecu plugged up... and I certainly dont want to run it for an entire drive cycle to be able to pass emissions. ive already blown one motor...

I'm guessing my only other option is to stick with a piggyback system... thoughts?

I would assume you would have to swap out your MAF and Injectors back to stock. What he told you is accurate. You just have to put two and two together. lolI would say pull your wastegate spring/actuator arm too while you were at it.

If you're OBDII you're pretty much screwed when it comes to being scanned.

You could use subinjection or the FMU and the MSD BTM though...

Get a fake sticker! lol j/k.

I've made a thread on something like this not too long ago. From the answers I've gotten and the research I've done, if you keep your emissions all in place with EGR tube connected to the downpipe (or use the resistor method) and an O2 simulator for the rear O2, with a conservitive tune, you should pass the ECU scan. You just don't have to throw any codes.

I'll be running my 96 on a JWT+SAFCII on my t3/t4 turbo. Egr tube connected to the downpipe and rear o2 simulator.

I'll be creating an SAFC conservitive tune for emissions. 1 week prior to the test I'll reset any codes, change the SAFC settings and just won't boost for that week. Check for codes one last time b4 rolling up into the test and get it scanned. After the test it'll be back to the normal tune. my mechanic said we are allowed to throw 2 codes, 3 and you fail. might be different in your area.

If all fails, I'll convert it back to NA with stock DP, injectors, stock ECU and get it over with.

Yeah in this case if your going to run a tuned ecu, your best best is probably a week before emissions just put it back to stock. Quick way to do it is just have a spare fuel rail already with stock injectors in it, so you don't have to kill your self poping those things out.

But all in all taking it off and putting it back on shouldn't be that hard after the first initial install. All you would really have to do is cap off your oil feed and return lines.

i wonder if your mechanic is talking about the obd2 monitors or does he really mean 2 codes.

Something that just popped in my head would be when you take out the turbo you use a custom pipe to connect the DP to the manifold, turn into a header. Just trying to think of other things that might make it faster to swap over.
