Hi
I own a 2004 Nissan Maxima and I am looking for a reliable ODB2 code scanner, just for code readings. Has anyone bought one and had a positive experience with it?
Many thanks

The best budget scanners these days are phone apps like Torque Pro or NDS-III. Get an ELM327 adaptor for the OBD port, download an app, link the ELM to your phone. Lots of capabilities for about $25 total cost. More if you're Apple and not 'Droid, but there are apps and hardware like Blue Driver specifically for iPhones.

I'm happy with my Autel AL319. $27
Just be gentle with the screen because it can be cracked by its own OBDII dongle.

I'm always leery of subscriber tools, and that one will cost you $40/yr on top of the unit cost, plus extra for the enhanced manufacturer-specific features. It sounds like a complete handjob if all you need to do is read codes and stream engine parameters.

Okay. Do you know any other single brand scanner?

Personally I use this $20 OBD-Bluetooth adaptor...

...and a copy of Torque Pro and NDS-III, $5 and $7 respectively IIRC. Either one will do what you need for basic OBD tasks and data streaming.

Are your adapter and app able to read ABS and Airbag trouble codes?

I'd go with OBD Fusion for that. $10 for the app and I think $10 for the Advanced Diagnostics package (vehicle-specific). That does both SRS and ABS.

They have a Nissan enhanced diagnostic package, but unfortunately, it only covers models after 2006.

Thanks anyway.
