Post

In my search for a nice OBD2 I ducked into a local performance auto store.During our conversation I mentioned my 2009 Rogue, I was cautioned about buying any older second hand units, ebay etc, unless I knew exactly what I was getting into due to the new standard for "all" 2008 and newer cars (sold in the US anyway) now must use the ISO 15765 standard. Hmmm ... from what I've been able to read in my research it appears this ISO standard is akin to the Controller Area Network (CAN).

Anyway, I've been away from the newer car market for so long all the my diagnostic equipment would be considered vintage. I’m looking for a good OBD2 scanner that allows me to not only check and reset codes but perform diagnostics! I don't want to drop $150+ on a unit only to find out all it does is display codes. There are several quality code display units for $50. I was originally looking at the Actron and the Equus 31XX model lineups but figured I'd better check with the members here to see if anyone has already already identified a killer unit and ... also works with their Rogue.

However, I only further confused myself when searching on the ISO 15765 topic … and read a reply in another thread from philipa_240sx;

Yikes… I was initially thinking it was all done thru the OBDII connector “and” was under the assumption the OBDII connector “was” the CAN Bus (in so many word) Does this mean there are multiple connection points for extracting data? More than one diagnostic tool required? Also… has anyone determined “if” the Rogue supports conventional OBDII diagnostics? Please feel free to set me straight.

NOTE: anyway… back to my initial request… I know a lot of forum members are high on the ScanGuage II ... but the trip computer in my SL already provides me with information like distance-to-empty, average fuel consumption, average speed, elapsed time, outside temperature etc... I also don't need another display on my dash... I'm just looking for a diagnostic tool I can plugin when needed to troubleshoot errors, codes, check engine lights, perform error code resets, run diagnostics etc...

Any suggestions?

Yes, there is multiple connection points in the diagnostic connector for multiple protocols: older OBDII (ISO 9141-2 and ISO 14230-4) and CAN bus.

I am unsure if an older OBDII scan tool will work with the Rogue. Most of the Rogue's computers are connected via CAN bus so an older OBDII reader might be limited to engine computer diagnostics only.

Ideally, you need a scan tool that supports CAN bus to be sure. I wouldn't buy anything less.

I came across this old post while looking into OBD2 scanners for my 2008 Rogue. Can you let me know what you finally decided? Thanks.
