Yesterday I got a 4 wheel alignment done {they did an excellent job,toe on all 4 wheels spot on spec, same with rear camber and 0.0000 thrust angle!- guess it pays to go to the independant little guy at $99 instead of all the chain tire stores advertising $72 specials}

Anywho- later in the day the engine light comes on and I plug in my reader and get P1220 fuel pump control unit - reset light and it hasnt come back on yet,and no pending codes stored either. Car never showed any performance issue confirming any problem- wonder if it was a fluke or early warning of FPCU problems ahead?

To be safe, threw a wire with alligator clips in the trunk and ordered a newer FPCU off ebay tonight for $55 as a potential spare- the ebay seller provided detailed pics showing interior of fpcu and its unburnt connector.According to the part # he provided it is a current production number FPCU, somebody must have replaced it along the way.IOS wanted $438 for the same part number unit tonight.....Thanks but ,no thank you.

I did not measure fuel pressure or any other potential diagnostic tests yet, as the car is not showing any symptoms of a problem yet- we shall see.

Whats your opinion of a used fpcu? Do they really go bad if you service the pump? Maybe a question for the tech.

Always a risk to purchase a used item, especially one with moving parts. Luckily the FPCU has no moving parts-but generally fails from over-current conditions that show up as brown/black burnt spots on connector and circuit board....why you must inspect/ask for pictures of any used one you are considering. Mine has 223,000 miles on it and I am on my 2nd pump which is still quiet. I guess they could also fail from old solder joints like the MAF does- lots of heat/cold cycles and vibration/shock components are subject to in automotive environment.

I never did, until now. My FPCU might not even be bad, but the light coming on has my antennas up, and I want to be prepared just in case, therefor the purchase{ and why I cant justify purchasing a brand new one for $438 that I may not even need}

Worst case is I am out $55 if I never end up needing it before I replace the car, then I will just sell it to another Q owner.Seems like a no-brainer to have on hand for the $$ invested?

Depends how long it powered a failing fuel pump.

The pump was done at 50k for maint. No noise from pump before I did it. So I quess I should worry about other items. Like all the rubbers!

Just a quick followup- it has been 3 days, many starts, and about 70 miles, and the MIL remains unlit......so far so good? Time will tell.

So no fuel pressure measurement to confirm failure?

Mine went out at 70K or so as judged by noise. New one is noisy also.

Rubber that is brittle and hard, or even just old, is best replaced by time schedule which varies by your environment and tolerances - heat, O3, salt, freezen days, etc.

So far so good- but the pessimist in me says if the light came on, there is a reason- maybe an intermittant solder joint developing? Will feel better with the spare FPCU stowed in the trunk just in case.

The MIL has only lit 2 other times in 223,000 miles, and both times led straight to the problem.

Brian, did your replacement fuel pump make noise even when brand new, or did it begin later? I noticed my 2nd pump was not dead quiet upon install.

No, I just replaced it even though it was good. I guess I'm a little over cautious. Sold the old one on ebay for $90! Pretty crazy.
