OBD-II is really what holds back R33 GTR-s from being legal?

I was just perusing the forums and was reading about legal skyline importation.... Not that I actually was looking to import (already have a RB26 powered S14), but I thought it was an interesting topic, and one that I hadn't read about in a while (although I did a number of years ago when much less info was available).

So what I gathered from the research was that effectively only 96 to 98 R33 GTR and GTS-Ts are allowed by the NHTSA for importation. And now that J.K. Tech's information is publicly available, almost everything on the safety side of things is taken care of.... Or at least *could* be taken care of (NHTSA specifically says that J.K is not the only RI allowed to import).

Which leaves the OBD-II issue. I'll be honest, I'm a little shocked to hear that is such an issue. From what I gathered on the EPA site, it certainly looks as though an ICI registered with the EPA can modify the vehicle to bring it up to to emissions conformance which includes OBD-II.

Am I missing anything here?

I dont think there ever was an OBDII design for that engine so making one from scratch would cost a lot. I think its like $2000 or more if Im not mistaken...

Really? It just needs to be OBD-II compliant and pass emissions and implement everything JK did and you would be federally legal? Some importers should get off their a** and get OBD-II on the RB26.

Sure there wasn't an OBD-II system specifically for the RB26... but there was on many other Nissan vehicles. IMHO (granted I am pretty knowledgeable in EFI) it's not that hard, definately in the realm of something doable for reasonably low cost.

You got time on your hands go for it and then you can bring them in and earn the loot. Seriously if it was economical or easy it would've been done already. I don't think you've checked JK's prices or you probably wouldn't have started this thread

Im sure he didnt check Jk's prices, who cant do anything anyways. JK has never even brought a skyline into compliance. G&K in socal did MX "conversions" call them and ask but your looking at 30k for the paperwork

I do see your point in terms of JK's cost, but that should mean there is a market for any RIs and ICIs to undercut them. Essecially since everything needed for the NHTSA is public knowledge. I guess my point is that you have people who swap RBs for example into jut about any chassis and the work required for emissions / OBDII is on the same level of difficulty.
