obd 1 or consult

i wanna get a scan tool for a 93 j30 should i get the obd 1 or consult. the consult i saw on ebay looks like it has no screen for testing do i hook it to a comp do i need software is obd 1 better?

You do know you can read the codes for an OBDI J30 right of the ECU box?

my 93 j30 is running rough and stalling when cold. i checked the ecu for codes and didnt get any. i know there a tester like the consult that can be plugged in and will do all kinds of tests for u and u can see the results. this is the consul i saw on ebay im not sure how it works. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...A1318

it looks like it might plug into a comp or labtap but need software i dunno.

i know theres a tester where i can do all kinds of test like check the senors to see if they work check injectors ect. and obd 1 i believe is for american cars. any 1 know how to use this thing. if u cant see it just type in consult on ebay and ul see what i mean . thanks for helpin guys

obd1 is not JUST for american cars...

There is no consult port on the the J for years previous to 1995.

Read codes off the ECU.

I don;'t rust that guy, Haven't seen anything from before but:

1.) He shows no pics of the consult connector.

2.) He has it for $20, that super cheap, O wait I saw the shipping it is $20 too.

And if the above poster is correct then your out of $40.

I have the consult rig from EMance (Drape) and I love it ..Yeah you can pull the codes from the ECU .But can you watch your TPS voltage ? Check the O2 sensor outputs ? Do a Power balance test ?The list goes on .Bet investment Ive made for the J for awhile.

And yes it pulls the codes as well

Yup.I believe the only Injector test is the power balance test but I haven't dug too deep into the software.It shuts off one cylinder at a time and shows a chart of the RPM drop for each cylinder shut off.
